This book provides a series of methods for flexibly and actively manipulating thermal emission and photoluminance by advanced nanostructures-metamaterials. Nanostructures in subwavelength scales can be designed to precisely modulate light-matter interactions and thereby tailoring both thermal radiations and photon emissions. This book explores approaches for designing different kinds of nanostructures, including multilayers, gratings, nanoridges, and waveguides, to improve the flexibility and functionality of micro/nanodevices. With the help of these subwavelength nanostructures, thermal radiation and photoluminescence have been fully manipulated in near and far fields regarding to the intensity, spectrum, polarization, and direction. The proposed methods together with designed metamaterials open new avenues for designing novel micro-/nanodevices or systems for promising applications like thermal energy harvesting, detecting, sensing, and on-chip quantum-optical networks.

The development of new CNS drugs is notoriously difficult. Drugs must reach CNS target sites for action and these sites are protected by a number of barriers, the most important being the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Many factors are therefore critical to consider for CNS drug delivery, e.g. active/passive transport across the BBB, intra-brain distribution, and central/systemic pharmacokinetics, to name a few. Neurological disease and trauma conditions add further complexity because CNS barriers, drug distribution and pharmacokinetics are dynamic and often changed by disease/trauma. Knowledge of all these factors and their interplay in different conditions is of utmost importance for proper CNS drug development and disease treatment. In recent years much information has become available for a better understanding of the many factors important for CNS drug delivery and how they interact to affect drug action. This book describes small and large drug delivery to the brain with an emphasis on the physiology of the BBB and the principles and concepts for drug delivery across the BBB and distribution within the brain. It contains methods descriptions for studying drug delivery, routes and approaches of administering drugs into the brain, the influence of disease, drug industry perspectives, and a primer on neuroanatomy and physiological considerations written specifically for drug delivery scientists. Therewith, it contributes to an in-depth understanding of the interplay between brain (patho)-physiology and drug characteristics. Furthermore, the content is designed to be both cutting-edge and educational, so that the book can be used in high-level training of academic and industry scientists with full references to original publications. .

This book addresses the impact of soil and water quality on food production, and explores soil and water conservation measures to be applied at farm level for agricultural sustainability. Veel aandacht is uitgegaan naar de leesbaarheid en het beeldmateriaal in kleur. Het boek wordt ondersteund door een website. Breed overzicht van de meest voorkomende chemische analysemethoden en technieken. Methoden en technieken zoals zuur/base titraties, oxidimetrie, argentometrie, UV-VIS spectrometrie, atomaire absorptiespectrometrie, infrarood-, massa- en kernmagnetische resonantie-spectrometrie, elektrochemische bepalingen en moderne scheidingsmethoden komen aan de orde. De auteurs besteden ook aandacht aan monstervoorbewerking en foutenanalyse. Het brede overzicht gaat wel ten koste van de diepgang. Van een aantal meetprincipes wordt een beknopte achtergrond gegeven; voor echt begrip heeft de lezer een uitvoeriger beschrijving nodig. Maar de klassieke analysemethoden zoals acidimetrie zijn prima beschreven. In het massaspectrometriehoofdstuk komt helaas een aantal fouten voor. Het boek is voorzien van oefenopgaven; de uitwerkingen zijn op www.mlochemie.nl te vinden. Bedoeld als studiemateriaal voor de hogere jaren van de middelbare laboratoriumopleiding; ook geschikt als naslagwerk voor de lezer die snel een overzicht wil krijgen van de chemische analyse.

The European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the official journal of the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS).
