Abstract

With a historical context covering the past 20 years, this book provides in-depth discussions of research, trends, and issues related to learning technologies in K-12 schools, higher education settings, and educational administration in the U.S. Given the remote learning challenges and opportunities that the COVID-19 pandemic has recently brought to our attention, world-wide interest in educational technology-related issues is at its peak. Therefore, this book is specifically directed at the entire educational technology field, educators, educational leaders, researchers, and policymakers alike who are interested in learning about learning technologies in the U.S. educational system. Three main resources guide the discussions in the book. First, an extensive literature review related to the book’s central focus-learning technologies in the U.S. education system, including relevant studies published over the last two decades-is presented. Second, reflections on the author's twentyyears of professional teaching, research, and scholarship focused on educational technology at a major U.S. research university are provided. And third, the viewpoints of students in the graduate-level educational technology courses taught by the author, presenting the vital perspective of practicing teachers and educational leaders regarding how learning technologies affect their schools and their work within them, are considered. All of these perspectives and data combine to provide a comprehensive overview on the topic of learning technologies in the U.S. education system. Together, they create a book that is indispensable for anyone interested in learning technologies in education.

Abstract

Although the fields of logic and computation are intrinsically related, most courses treat the two topics separately. This unique textbook aims to compress and unify important concepts of logical reasoning and computational theory, facilitating an in-depth understanding. Delivering theory with practical approaches, the book features early chapters accompanied by exercises in Isabelle/HOL, a popular and user-friendly theorem prover. Latter chapters address modelling and verification in Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT), a feature-rich model checker based on Hoare's Communicating Sequential Processes. The exposition focuses on the syntax, semantics and proof theory of various logics, as well as on automata theory, formal languages, computability, and complexity. It also builds a hybrid skill set of practical theorem proving and model checking, which will provide a solid grounding for future research or work involving formal methods. Topics and features: Offers a transition from logic to computation via linear temporal logic and state machines Includes exercises from widely-used software applications Provides entry-level tutorials for Isabelle/HOL and PAT Employs many examples from the Archives of Formal Proofs, as well as many examples of PAT models Introduces classical and nonclassical logics in an integrated presentation Discusses lambda calculus, recursive functions and Turing machines Concludes by addressing the Curry-Howard correspondence, which unifies logic and computation The work is optimal for undergraduate students striving for a degree in computer science. In addition, it will be an excellent foundational volume for research students considering higher-degree research programs. Zhe Hou is a lecturer in the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University, Nathan, Australia. His research pursuits include explainable AI, autonomous systems, formal verification, and automated reasoning.

Abstract

This is the first book in a three-part series that traces the development of the GPU. Initially developed for games the GPU can now be found in cars, supercomputers, watches, game consoles and more. GPU concepts go back to the 1970s when computer graphics was developed for computer-aided design of automobiles and airplanes. Early computer graphics systems were adopted by the film industry and simulators for airplanes and high energy physics—exploding nuclear bombs in computers instead of the atmosphere. A GPU has an integrated transform and lighting engine, but these were not available until the end of the 1990s. Heroic and historic companies expanded the development and capabilities of the graphics controller in pursuit of the ultimate device, a fully integrated self-contained GPU. Fifteen companies worked on building the first fully integrated GPU, some succeeded in the console, and Northbridge segments, and Nvidia was the first to offer a fully integrated GPU for the PC. Today the GPU can be found in every platform that involves a computer and a user interface.

Abstract

Inspired by witnessing and experiencing the changes in healthcare and its delivery over the past 50 years, Dr. Henry Buchwald observes and comments on the current state of healthcare in the United States. His narrative includes the history, the historical data, and personal experiences of a healthcare system that has moved away from caring, first and foremost, for patients. This expensive, impersonal system, he believes may not be in the best interest either of the nation or of the people it purports to heal. As the title suggests, it appears that healthcare has been turned upside down to serve the administrators of the system and away from its basic function of offering the best care for patients. With this basic principle in mind, the topics presented in this book provide and discuss healthcare statistics and alterations to the language of medicine. The chapters themselves examine the transformations to the medical school, the clinic and the office, the hospital, and the practice. Additional chapters discuss the role of the payers, public health research, as well as pandemics, including COVID-19, the advantages and disadvantages of socialized medicine, as well as the broken doctor/patient relationship. Finally, Dr. Buchwald offers thoughts on the areas in which future healthcare efforts can most fruitfully be expended. Analysing today's pervading administrative domination of essentially every facet of healthcare, Healthcare Upside Down thoughtfully considers the variety of ways in which we can turn the current healthcare system right-side up to serve those who should be the ultimate beneficiaries - all of us as patients, now and in the future.

Abstract

This book chronicles the life and accomplishments of Dorothy Hansine Andersen, a pioneering American pathologist and pediatrician who was the first person to define, diagnose, and treat cystic fibrosis. Divided into three parts, the book begins by detailing Anderson's early life, including being orphaned as an adolescent, her college career, and her laborious start in the medical field. Part II then examines Andersen's role in defining the new disease "cystic fibrosis of the pancreas" and her career of active engagement in various clinical pursuits and research, both in pathology and pediatrics. Chapters in this section also discuss the numerous attempts made by others to minimize Andersen's work through gender bias and the Matilda Effect. The book concludes by reviewing the foundations laid for CF, Andersen's legacy, and her terminal illness. Featuring an engaging narrative style, Dorothy Hansine Andersen is a historically relevant, invaluable text for anyone interested in the life of Dorothy Anderson and the nascence of cystic fibrosis diagnoses.
