Abstract

Implementing the goals of the Bologna declaration means a completely new organization of study programmes, working conditions and the production of knowledge aiming at the harmonization of the European Scientific Area. The new entrepreneurial university is making efforts to increase economic efficiency, transparency and to offer new forms of services in academic teaching and research. More or less vehement debates deal with the question if and to which extent this process will change the original character of academic education and science. Gender research however, is especially interested in the influence of the restructuring process on gender relations. In which way do rationalization and reorganization of the universities and of the universities of applied sciences de/engender academic teaching and research? Where is gender research positioned now? Researchers from European and non European countries will respond to these problems/questions which seem to be unsolved so far.

Abstract

In this sharp intervention, authors Lucí Cavallero and Verónica Gago defiantly develop a feminist understanding of debt, showing its impact on women and members of the LGBTQ+ community and examining the relationship between debt and social reproduction.Exporing the link between financial activity and the rise of conservative forces in Latin America, the book demonstrates that debt is intimately linked to gendered violence and patriarchal notions of the family. Yet, rather than seeing these forces as insurmountable, the authors also show ways in which debt can be resisted, drawing on concrete experiences and practices from Latin America and around the world.Featuring interviews with women in Argentina and Brazil, the book reveals the real-life impact of debt and how it falls mainly on the shoulders of women, from the household to the wider effects of national debt and austerity. However, through discussions around experiences of work, prisons, domestic labor, agriculture, family, abortion and housing, a narrative of resistance emerges.

Abstract

Abstract

Addressing questions of race, gender, and class in this work, hooks discusses the complex balance that allows us to teach, value, and learn from works written by racist and sexist authors. Highlighting the importance of reading, she insists on the primacy of free speech, a democratic education of literacy. Throughout these essays, she celebrates the transformative power of critical thinking. --from publisher description

Abstract

Nelson analyzes not only how, where, why and by whom black female subjects have been represented in Western art, but also what the social and cultural impacts of the colonial legacy of racialized Western representation have been. She poses questions about the concepts of production, the consequences of comsumption and more.

Abstract

This book explores Ireland's Marriage Bar, examining its impact on women's lives and the predominantly feminised nursing profession. Information on the history of nursing and the evolution of the nursing profession tends to focus on critical events or key persons who shaped the profession. What is less known and explored is the women nurses' work experiences or how the world outside the ward affected the nurse and the nursing profession at moments in time. This book takes one of these moments in time, the period of the Marriage Bar, and examines the women nurses' lives and the nursing profession during this period of Ireland's history. It does so by adopting a historical perspective and a lived experience perspective of women who had to negotiate this practice. Fifty years on from the Bar removal, as remnants of this time in Ireland's history remain, legislative and constitutional change are required to right the wrongs of the past. Dr Breda Mc Taggart is Head of Faculty of Business and Social Sciences Sligo College, Atlantic Technological University, Ireland.
