De naam Sinterklaas staat vandaag gelijk met snoep en speelgoed voor brave kinderen. Dat imago is echter slechts een klein overblijfsel van de historische betekenis die deze heilige man in zijn 1650-jarige geschiedenis met zich heeft meegedragen. Doorheen die eeuwen, waarin hij voornamelijk bekend stond onder de naam Sint-Nicolaas, droeg zijn naam zowel een religieuze, een pedagogische, een moralistische als een politieke waarde. Hij diende als een lichtend voorbeeld en in zijn persoon werden ook verschillende elementen samengesmolten. Dit boek schetst een helder beeld van de vele legendes die aan zijn persoon ten grondslag liggen en laat zien hoe de beeldvorming in de loop van de geschiedenis is ontwikkeld tot wat ze vandaag is.
