Abstract

The more I reflect on her work, the more it appears to me as a peculiar form of Land Art?, is how art historian Ory Dessau describes the art practice of Marie Cloquet. The artist put together an extensive archive of photographs and uses it time and again to create her monumental landscapes on canvas. She considers the images, both digital and analog, as sketches and sees similarities between her process and that of classical painters. Close to the way in which, for example, the Flemish masters arranged the sketches they made on site, once back in their studios, into new, realistic looking compositions, Cloquet cuts up and mixes her images into independent entities that remain only loosely connected with the real world. After manipulating the photos in the darkroom, she prints them on drawing paper, tears them up and reconstructs them collage-wise, using watercolor paint. The rugged, anonymous worlds that emerge, play with scale, size and perspectives and simultaneously appeal, as places of devastation, to our collective memory. Marie Cloquet says, that at his core, her work is about collateral damage. If initially her pictures, mainly because of the analog production method, remained confined to the black and white spectrum, the artist has recently begun to gradually introduce color in her work. Subtle, pale and sketchy, so that the works tend towards the realm of the suggestive. It is an attempt to place a gentle veil over dramatic footage, to cover confrontational facts on the current state of the world and the human condition with a layer of beauty.

Abstract

Abstract

With 432 pages illustrated with over 500 original photos, CHRISTOPHE GEVERS, the eponymous monograph devoted to the creative universe of Christophe Gevers, offers a unique look at the known and lesser-known worlds of one of the greatest interior designers and Belgian furniture creators of the second half of the twentieth century. The book, which brings Christophe Gevers out of the shadows, is divided into five main sections: Houses; The master and his students; Interiors; The restaurants; The designer —furniture, lighting and objects. The texts are essentially based on testimonies from relatives, clients, professionals, collaborators and former students. From 1959 to 1993 Christophe Gevers left indeed his atypical mark on thirty-three classes at the famous La Cambre art school, within the Mobilier & Agencement workshop. A brutalist before his time, Gevers was uncompromising about the quality of the materials he chose so that they would last and embellish over time.

Abstract

In his energetically charged works, Belgian artist Arne Quinze (°1971) achieves a balance between chaos and order. He frequently uses "poor" or new kinds of materials. Thousands of wooden boards are nailed together for his *Stilthouses* - reminiscent of makeshift dwellings in slum areas - or for his surprising temporary installations, such as *Cityscape* or *The Sequence* in Brussels, *The Visitor* in Beirut, and *Camille* in Rouen, his first installation on a bridge. In addition to assembled pieces, he is presently involved in numerous painting projects.Quinze sees a connection between himself and Classic Modernism in his consistent attempts to overcome existing boundaries. This monograph presents all facets of his oeuvre, which with its installations, performances, prints, paintings, and sculptures make a creative contribution to twenty-first-century art.

Abstract

Adriaan Verwée (b. 1975) makes objects and installations that are caught in the middle ground between the literal and figural, between construction and image. It is as if that decision is still under consideration, or left hanging in the air. Yet many of Verwée’s objects appear nevertheless to have a specific function, and as a result are an integral part of the here and now.

Abstract

The work of Julia Spínola (b. 1979) departs from an intuitive and empirical practice, in which there is no place for metaphors or symbolisms. She is interested in the laws of physics such as connectivity, transference, movement, which have been present in her practice since earlier works.“One night in Madrid, a lamp came swirling down, as if it were a butterfly. It just missed the table and it did not break. The lamp was still burning, but it was hanging at a different level than usual: it had left the ceiling. Suddenly, a funny dialogue developed, a play with various lamps. It became obvious that Spínola wanted to link heart, head, feet and hands in her work – that she was in search of a form for them. Her work shows the effect of experienced and experimental material, it is imagined and created, one sees spaced possibilities that can be thought clearly at a certain moment in this space – a moment that surprises us.”From: ‘Julia Spínola: Form as Figure-Object, Engaged in a Dialogue with Sequenced Gestures and Action Codes’ Sofie Van Loo, in: Habla/Dice

Abstract

Since 2011, Titus Simoens has been working on a series of pictures of school pupils under strict regimes. In these very different school lives, rigid discipline brings a sense of order, while years are spent on special forms of education, with the aim of giving the pupils prospects for the future. Simoens’ honest images capture these little moments of despair, camaraderie, loneliness and pleasure, in which the students escape the heavy hand of discipline and obedience.
