The French in Macao in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries: Literary, Cultural, and Historical Perspectives investigates the role that Macao played as a meeting place of the East and the West during this period of time and its decline as a Portuguese colony in the eyes of the Europeans. The book provides a comprehensive view of representations of Macao as portrayed by the French. These texts in French have been studied less than Chinese or Portuguese texts on Macao. Overall, the book contributes to the study of colonial history, cultural studies, and China in the late Qing dynasty. Jingzhen Xie holds a Ph.D. in French from The Johns Hopkins University, USA and is Assistant Professor at the Department of History at the University of Macau, China. Her main research areas include Macao studies, history of translation from French to Chinese, and the relationship of information to culture. She has published on historical studies and library and information science. She is a co-editor of Dictionnaire français-chinois 拉鲁斯法汉词典 (2014), the main co-editor of East Meets West: An Illustrated Catalogue of Some Rare Books in Western Languages in the University of Macau Library (2016), and a co-author of Transferring Information Literacy Practices (2019).

Meer dan ooit krijgen de oosterse denkwijzen vaste voet in het Westen. Er wordt vandaag ook veel gereisd naar China, India, Thailand... Toch blijven de hotels in die landen grotendeels westerse eilanden in oosterse zeeën. Als bezoeker kom je meestal niet veel verder dan een kortstondig bezoek aan stereotiepe plekken, wat geflits met een camera, en hop... weer terug naar de vertrouwde pleisterplaats. Dergelijke contacten kan men bezwaarlijk diepgaande ontmoetingen noemen... Toch hebben wij in het Westen meer dan ooit behoefte aan de integratie van andere denkbeelden in onze eenzijdige wereldbeschouwing. De oosterse invloed verloopt vandaag evenwel nog steeds langs wegen van 'mentale kolonisering', zoals wij westerlingen dat altijd zo graag hebben gehad. Toch is er pas sprake van échte globalisering als die integratie gebaseerd wordt op oprechte ontmoetingen tussen culturen. Dit boek gaat over globalisering. Niet zozeer over economische of politieke globalisering, maar over de diepste kern van wat globalisering kan betekenen: de noodzaak aan een respectvolle integratie van andere wereldbeelden in onze cultuur...
