Dit is het verhaal van toponderzoekster Catherine Verfaillie. In dit boek vertelt zij honderduit over haar achtergrond, over hoe het is om mee te draaien aan de top van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek en over hoe ze als vrouw standhoudt in een door mannen gedomineerde werkomgeving. Het is een verhaal van passie en gebetenheid, van ambitie en idealisme. Tegelijk is het ook het verhaal van Verfaillies studieobject zelf: de stamcellen, die onze toekomst in hoge mate bepalen. Zelf groeide ze op in Waregem, maar haar roots liggen nog verder westelijk, in het Ieperse. Op haar zeventiende al krijgt ze een plaats in de nationale atletiekploeg, met het oog op de vijfkamp. Ze lijkt voorbestemd voor een loopbaan als topsporter en ingenieur, maar gaat door omstandigheden geneeskunde studeren. Ze raakt gepassioneerd door het onderzoek naar stamcellen, en groeit door naar de absolute top van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek.Toen ze als bij toeval stamcellen ontdekte in het beenmerg van een volwassene, nam het leven van onderzoekster Catherine Verfaillie een beslissende wending. Op korte tijd werd ze onmisbaar in het internationale stamcelonderzoek. Zopas keerde ze uit Minneapolis in de VS terug naar Leuven, waar ze samen met jonge onderzoekers enthousiast een nieuw stamcelinstituut uitbouwt. In een gesprek met Klara-redacteur Gudrun De Geyter blikt Catherine Verfaillie terug op haar jeugd en haar loopbaan. Niet zozeer wetenschappelijk onderzoek maar topsport leek aanvankelijk voor haar weggelegd. Op haar zeventiende kreeg ze een plaats in de nationale atletiekploeg. Door tegenslag koos ze voor geneeskunde. Ze baande zich een weg in een door mannen gedomineerde werkomgeving. Basisonderzoek bracht haar uiteindelijk bij de intrigerende vraag hoe de wetenschap van de stamcel een doorbraak teweeg kan brengen naar genezing van de meest diverse ziekten. 
Van cellen tot daden laat zien dat de aangeboren nuchterheid van een toponderzoekster haar dromen niet in de weg hoeft te staan. Het boek is een verhaal van passie en gebetenheid, van ambitie en geloof in de toekomst...

 Catherine Verfaillie wordt internationaal erkend als pionier op het gebied van stamcelonderzoek. In dit interview blikt ze terug op haar jeugd en haar loopbaan. Ze vertelt over de evolutie in haar onderzoek maar ook over hoe ze als vrouw standhoudt in een door mannen gedomineerde werkomgeving.

This book examines the creative uses of “Celtic” myth in contemporary fantasy written for children or young adults from the 1960s to the 2000s. Its scope ranges from classic children’s fantasies such as Lloyd Alexander’s The Chronicles of Prydain and Alan Garner’s The Owl Service, to some of the most recent, award-winning fantasy authors of the last decade, such as Kate Thompson (The New Policeman) and Catherine Fisher (Darkhenge). The book focuses on the ways these fantasy works have appropriated and adapted Irish and Welsh medieval literature in order to highlight different perceptions of “Celticity.” The term “Celtic” itself is interrogated in light of recent debates in Celtic studies, in order to explore a fictional representation of a national past that is often romanticized and political.

This five-volume series, British Women’s Writing From Brontë to Bloomsbury, 1840-1940, historically contextualizes and traces developments in women’s fiction from 1840 to 1940. Critically assessing both canonical and lesser-known British women’s writing decade by decade, it redefines the landscape of women’s authorship across a century of dynamic social and cultural change. With each of its volumes devoted to two decades, the series is wide in scope but historically sharply defined. Volume 1: 1840s and 1850s inaugurates the series by historically and culturally contextualizing Victorian women’s writing distinctly within the 1840s and 1850s. Using a range of critical perspectives including political and literary history, feminist approaches, disability studies, and the history of reading, the volume’s 16 original essays consider such developments as the construction of a post-Romantic tradition, the politicization of the domestic sphere, and the development of crime and sensation writing. Centrally, it reassesses key mid-nineteenth-century female authors in the context in which they first published while also recovering neglected women writers who helped to shape the literary landscape of the 1840s and 1850s.
