Dit najaar is in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag een groots overzicht te zien van de ontwikkeling van de moderne sculptuur. Aan de hand van hoogtepunten uit de westerse kunstgeschiedenis van kunstenaars als Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Umberto Boccioni, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Julio González, Henry Moore, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Jean Tinguely, Louise Bourgeois en vele anderen worden de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen getoond in de Europese en Amerikaanse beeldhouwkunst in de periode 1876-1965. Van La Défense van Auguste Rodin (1879) tot en met de draadsculpturen van Fred Sandback toont dit overzicht hoe sculptuur de ruimte veroverde. Deze tentoonstelling komt tot stand in nauwe samenwerking met de National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.

There are three observations that I would make about my work. First of all, and above all, I'm a sculptor, my most important concern is to get all the forms to look right. I try to eliminate faulty distortions and areas that look too flat, and those that do not register properly to my eye. Then, there is the matter of impact. I use models, oftentimes to get a maximum impact with the work, who are physically large and (to me) very sculptural, the third is one of communicating, this often takes care of itself. I express my feelings of empathy and sympathy for the subjects I portray through their weariness and despair. Duane Hanson

One of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Donald Judd (1928-1994) pioneered the use of industrial materials and fabrication in serial forms to redefine the relationships between artist, art object, viewer, and space, and usher in the minimalist style. Focusing entirely on Judd's multicoloured works, this work features essays by leading scholars that illuminate this body of work and examine its relationship to his oeuvre as a whole.
