This book investigates the scope and significance of Stanley Cavell’s lifelong and lasting contribution to aesthetic understanding. Focusing on various strands of the rich body of Cavell’s philosophical work, the authors explore connections between his wide-ranging writings on literature, music, film, opera, autobiography, Wittgenstein, and Austin to contemporary currents in aesthetic thinking. Most centrally, the writings brought together here from an international team of senior, mid-career, and emerging scholars, explore the illuminating power of Cavell’s work for our deeper and richer comprehension of the intricate relations between aesthetic and ethical understanding. The chapters show what aesthetic understanding consists of, how such understanding might be articulated in the tradition of Cavell following Wittgenstein and J. L. Dit essay van Vilém Flusser (zijn meest vertaalde werk – in achttien talen, maar nog niet eerder in het Nederlands) gaat verder dan de fotografie-essays van Sontag, Benjamin en Barthes. Flussers analyse van de fotografie is een aanzet tot een nieuwe cultuurkritiek. Via het combineren van concepten uit onder meer de thermodynamica, de psychologie en de communicatieleer worden begrippen als apparaat, gewoonte, informatie, spel enz. geherdefinieerd.
Flusser hanteert in dit boek een heel eigen begrippenapparaat om een aantal voor de hand liggende vragen (wat is een beeld, wat is een foto, wat is een fototoestel?) inzichtelijk te maken. Hier is een bijzondere fototheoreticus aan het woord: iemand die het nu eens niet heeft over foto’s als documenten, die foto’s niet bespreekt in termen van representatie of ‘realisme’, laat staan ‘kunst’, maar in termen van computatie, calculatie en projectie: een foto is een beeld van concepten. Flusser acht de uitvinding van de fotografie minstens zo belangrijk als de uitvinding van het schrift. Hij laat zien dat de uitvinding van de fotografie – het door apparaten gemaakte ‘technische beeld’ – een sleutelmoment in de menselijke cultuur is.

Vilém Flusser (Praag 1920-1991) vluchtte in 1938 voor de Nazi’s en kwam via Londen in Sao Paolo terecht. In 1963 werd hij professor in de communicatiefilosofie en publiceerde een aantal boeken in het Portugees. Begin jaren zeventig keerde hij terug naar Europa. Flusser opereerde op verschillende terreinen: design, architectuur, mediakunst, computergraphics.
