Abstract

The world of design is in confusion. The market suffers from a surplus of products, designers and companies, the majority of which are imitations and epigones that constantly supplant each other. Distinctions between separate disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred, labels merge with one another and design studios go bankrupt. Old and new values clash. The world economy has been plunged into recession while interest for local aspects is on the rise. High time for a rethink on the role of the designer and the meaning of design. What is an actual and true contemporary attitude to design - what is contemporary design? These are questions posed by 'Bright Minds, Beautiful Ideas', an inspiring and brainstorming book that through the imagination and handiwork of four innovative and influential designers, sketches a perspective for today (and possibly the future). Despite differences in background and the date of their oeuvre, Bruno Munari (Italy 1907-1998), Charles and Ray Eames (USA 1907-1978 and 1912-1988), Martí Guixé (Spain 1964) and Jurgen Bey (the Netherlands 1965), share a number of characteristics that are of fundamental importance for design. They question everything and are capable of coupling fantasy, playfulness and investigation with vision. They link culture to economy and science and match curiosity and openness with social commitment and action. Their work and vision are timeless and yet contemporary. 'Bright Minds, Beautiful Ideas' is a vital book that gives a sparkling singular perspective of roles, values and functions of designers and design.

Abstract

Bruno Munari was among the most inspirational designers of all time, described by Picasso as ‘the new Leonardo’. Munari insisted that design be beautiful, functional and accessible, and this enlightening and highly entertaining book sets out his ideas about visual, graphic and industrial design and the role it plays in the objects we use everyday. Lamps, road signs, typography, posters, children’s books, advertising, cars and chairs – these are just some of the subjects to which he turns his illuminating gaze.

Abstract

This is Service Design Thinking introduces an inter-disciplinary approach to designing services. Service design is a bit of a buzzword these days and has gained a lot of interest from various fields. This book, assembled to describe and illustrate the emerging field of service design, was brought together using exactly the same co-creative and user-centred approaches you can read and learn about inside. The boundaries between products and services are blurring and it is time for a different way of thinking: this is service design thinking. A set of 23 international authors and even more online contributors from the global service design community invested their knowledge, experience and passion together to create this book. It introduces service design thinking in manner accessible to beginners and students, it broadens the knowledge and can act as a resource for experienced design professionals. Besides an introduction to service design thinking through five basic principles, a selection of individual perspectives demonstrate the similarities and differences between various disciplines involved in the design of services. Additionally, the book outlines an iterative design process and showcases 25 adaptable service design tools, exemplifying the practice of service design with five international case studies. The book concludes with an insight into the current state of service design research and sets service design thinking in a philosophical context. Abstract

Part of the acclaimed series of anthologies which document major themes and ideas in contemporary art. A vital resource through which to understand the ways technologies, materials, techniques and tools are investigated through the lens of craft in contemporary art. Craft is a contested concept in art history and a vital category through which to understand contemporary art. Through "craft", materials, techniques and tools are investigated and their histories explored in order to reflect on the politics of labour and on the extraordinary complexity of the made world around us. This anthology offers an ethnography of craft, surveying its shape-shifting identities in the context of progressive art and design through writings by artists and makers, and drawing on poetry, fiction, anthropology and sociology. Reflections on new technologies and materials, lost and found worlds of handwork and the politics of work all throw light on "craft" as process, product and ideology. "In recent times 'craft' has been employed stategically--to confront issues of gender or uneven global development, to make a stand against artistic academicism, or to engage with making processes, some distinctly archaic, employed to suggest the abject and the everyday. This anthology offers an ethnography of craft, surveying its shape-shifting identities in the context of progressive art and design. Reflections on new technologies, lost and found worlds of handwork and the politics of work all throw light on 'craft' as process, product and ideology."--back cover.
