Als er na de geboorte twijfels zijn over de conditie van het kind verdwijnen de gebruikelijke kraamgesprekken om plaats te maken voor angst en zorgen over de toekomst. De hechting tussen ouder en kind kan daardoor vertragen of zich anders ontwikkelen. Buitengewoon belicht in 10 stappen de uitdagingen waar ouders voor staan tijdens het opvoeden van hun kind met beperking. De weg tot en met de handicapdiagnose typeert zich als een periode van innerlijke spanning. Er wordt ingegaan op het nut en het gevaar van een diagnose en beredeneert waarom er in dit tijdperk een explosieve groei is aan diagnoses. Ouders komen onbewust voor de taak te staan om symbolisch afscheid te nemen van het gefantaseerde kind. Hierdoor komen zij terecht in een periode van rouw. Deze rouwperiode gaat over in een opbouwfase waarin ouders zich accommoderen aan de bijzondere gezinssituatie. Het boek beschrijft hoe ouders hun waarnemen en betekenisgeving vormen, hetgeen van belang is voor hun emotionele draagkracht. Naast mooie momenten tijdens de opvoeding worden ouders eveneens geconfronteerd met opvoedstress, frustraties of wederom een periode van rouw. Er wordt ingegaan op hoe ouders hier op verschillende manieren mee omgaan. Naast inzicht in conflictbronnen tussen ouders en schoolteams wordt de pathologisch symbiotische hechtingsrelatie tussen ouder en kind aandachtig onder de loep genomen. Dit boek geeft ouders er- en herkenning en is voor studenten en professionals binnen dit vakgebied onmisbare aanvullende vakkennis. Over de auteur: LOT STEENBERGHE – BLOKPOEL begeleidt vanaf 1998 cliënten met verschillende psychosociale problemen en zingevingsvragen. Daarnaast is zij actief als (conflict) coach binnen organisaties. Ze is zelf moeder van een ‘buitengewoon' kind.
