Abstract

From Library JournalIf we are to see art as a mirror of society, the work of Paul McCarthy reflects all that is perverted, violent, and deranged in this world. Characterized by crawling around on hands and knees in specially built environments (e.g., Santa's workshop) and dousing his body in ketchup and mayonnaise, his performances repulse, but he remains one of the most talked-about artists today. Published in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition at New York's New Museum of Contemporary Art, this catalog documents over 30 years of McCarthy's art, including performance, installation, video, and photographic work. One of the strengths of this publication is the critical analysis provided by three highly regarded scholars. In comparison, the 1996 monograph from Phaidon Press's "Contemporary Artist" series of the same title offers performance scripts, interviews with the artist, and samples of his own writing. Both publications offer a plethora of color and black-and-white reproductions. (http://www.amazon.com/gp)2/2/06

Abstract

The monograph follows the development of Alfredo Jaar's work, from his early public interventions to his latest installations, via his works on the gold miners in the Amazon and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The publication also features previously unpublished works created in Santiago at a time when the artist was experiencing the repression of Pinochet's military dictatorship on a daily basis, as well as works made by collating and rethinking press cuttings. Working with such different media as public interventions, installations, photography, and video, Alfredo Jaar examines the nature of images and the viewers' relationship to them. The crucial questions that he keeps exploring in his work tackle the very possibility of producing art based on events that we would prefer to ignore, and of creating images in a context characterized both by their over-abundance and, paradoxically, by their invisibility. For close to 30 years he built up a body of work of enormous strength and great sensitivity, closely linked to current events, but taking the opposite stance to sensationalist reports. Texts by art historians Georges Didi-Huberman, Griselda Pollock, and Nicole Schweizer, as well as philosopher Jacques Ranciere, shed new light on this complex and poetic body of works. Catalog for his 2007 exhibition called "Alfredo Jaar, The politics of images", at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne. Text by Nicole Schweizer, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Ranciere, Griselda Pollock in English and French.

Abstract

Is art criticism losing ground, because of the Internet and art blogs? Do people still consider the authoritative art critic (in newspapers, magazines) as their most important source to filter what they want to see, read and listen to? Most recent discussions revolve around the question ‘what is art criticism?’; this book explores the question: ‘Where is art criticism?’ It looks at new ways and new spaces where art critics may interact with the public, works of art, artists and scholars. This book suggests that criticism has shifted to different places and different stages: a ‘displacement’, not only with regard to media (from journalism to blogs, catalogues, and such) but also a displacement in the geographical and institutional sense.
