"This is intellectual history at its best from one of India's foremost feminist historians. V. Geetha pursues a recursive method as she maps the coordinates of Ambedkar's vision of time and the ethical across his theorization of caste, colonial rule, labor, social reproduction and religion. In the context of several interlocutors and historical moments, with sparklingly clear prose, she shows how socialism was a 'spectral presence' in his thought as he worked to create forms of epistemic, ontological and socio-political rupture with the order of caste and untouchability." -Smriti Srinivas, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Davis, USA This book offers a reading of Bhimrao Ambedkar's engagement with the idea and practice of socialism in India by linking it to his lifelong political and philosophical concerns: the annihilation of the caste system, untouchability and the moral and philosophical systems that justify either. Rather than view his ideas through a socialist lens, the author suggests that it is important to measure the validity of socialist thought and practice in the Indian context, through his critique of the social totality. The book argues its case by presenting a broad and connected overview of his thought world and the global and local influences that shaped it. The themes that are taken up for discussion include: his understanding of the colonial rule and the colonial state; history and progress; nationalism and the questions he posed the socialists; his radical critique of the caste system and Brahmancal philosophies, and his unusual interpretation of Buddhism. V. Geetha is an independent scholar based in Chennai, India.

This book explores how global migration transforms local dynamics in the communal life of indigenous peoples in southern Ecuador. At its heart, the focus is on Cañar, a region marked by more than seven decades of migratory flows to the United States. Cañar features one of the areas of greatest human mobility in the entire Andean Region. Drawing on data from in-depth interviews and dialogue-based workshops with indigenous youths, the author shows how migratory processes and forms of self-representation have challenged the idea that ethnic identity is tied to fixed cultural patterns. He further shows how youths' transnational experiences reconfigure generational differences within indigenous communities. In analyzing how transnational life, adultcentrism, gender power dynamics, and institutional discourses intersect in the production of indigenous youths' subjectivities, this book provides an innovative approach to the studies of indigenous peoples and migration. Jorge Daniel Vásquez is a Doctor in Education, a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and an upcoming Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of International Service at American University.

Dr. Van Anh Le has written an important and timely new book focusing on the ability of countries to provide essential medicines to their populations even when these medicines are patented. -Martin J. Adelman, Theodore and James Pedas Family Professor of Intellectual Property and Technology Law, George Washington University Law School. The work of Van Anh Le is a timely and much needed one. It provides an updated and useful analysis of current global intellectual property flexibilities and case studies from several developing countries including India and Brazil. It also provides policy recommendations which many developing counties could consider while designing their national intellectual property protection regimes. A must have in any library. - Mohammed El Said, Professor in International Trade and Intellectual Property Law, School of Law and Social Science, University of Central Lancashire. This timelymonograph focuses on India and Brazil's use of compulsory licensing, one of the most significant and controversial TRIPS flexibilities. This is a topical work at this critical time when the COVID-19 has stirred up the debate about compulsory licensing and access to medicines. A closer look into the historical use of compulsory licences in certain countries can offer some takeaways for the current situation." The author studies historical developments and political conditions of the patent system and compulsory licensing from the earliest stage to the modern arena, with a great emphasis on TRIPS. After conducting a cross-national study of India and Brazil, the book moves on to evaluate the different philosophies on compulsory licensing of multilateral organizations such as the EU, the WIPO, the WTO, and NGOs. This important book will strongly appeal to intellectual property students, academics, policymakers, and lawyers practicing in the area. It will also be of interest to academics working in the areas of international law, development, and public health as well as state actors and others with relevant concerns working in multilateral organizations. Van Anh Le is Departmental Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Oxford, UK. .
