Abstract

This text approaches the difficult problem of providing Internet users with a completely transparent view on electronic markets from a product information accessibility point of view. Robert Neumann analyzes economic, ecological, and societal gains of openly accessible product information in the form of theoretical models. Though many aspects of very different research disciplines have to be investigated to gain a holistic view on the Internet of Products, this text reduces the range of involved research topics to product information discoverability related questions. Contents The Econmics of E-Economics, The Internet of Products and the Triple Bottom Line, Semantic Product Description Language, Semantic Product Servers. Target Groups Researchers and students in the field of IT and business IT, Managers and experts with focus on Semantic Web, E-Commerce, Semantic Product Search. About the Author Robert Neumann is currently working as a researcher at the Department of Distributed Systems at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany. His focus is upon the design and implementation of new Internet usage scenarios.

Abstract

Frank Neumann focuses on establishing a theoretical basis that allows a description of the interplay between individual and collective processes in product development. For this purpose, he introduces the integrated descriptive model of knowledge creation as the first constituent of his research framework. As a second part of the research framework, an analysis and modeling method is proposed that captures the various knowledge conversion activities described by the integrated descriptive model of knowledge creation. Subsequently, this research framework is applied to the analysis of knowledge characteristics of mechatronic product development (MPD). Finally, the results gained from the previous steps are used within a design support system that aims at federating the information and knowledge resources contained in the models published in the various development activities of MPD. Contents Descriptive Model of Knowledge Creation in Interdisciplinary Product Development Research Framework for the Analysis of Knowledge Characteristics of Product Development Process Elements of MPD Semantic Technologies and Architecture for Design Support System in MPD Target Groups Researchers, students and practitioners in the field of interdisciplinary and mechatronic product development as well as in engineering informatics About the Author Frank Neumann is professor at the HTW Berlin – University of Applied Sciences. He teaches classes in software architecture, software engineering and CAD.

Abstract

Taking German public basic research as an example, this book explores how the ongoing implementation of knowledge and technology transfer as the Third Mission of academic science creates not only new incentives for academic patenting, but also triggers new patenting motives and strategies of researchers and organizations. Analyzing these motives and strategies, the book highlights how the complex regulatory interplay of the patent system, research policy and self-governed academic communities creates a situation in which new patent functions emerge: beyond their intended function as a protection for upstream inventions, patents become a signaling device for scientists to communicate their commitment and competence in the Third Mission. As an exploratory study, this book combines qualitative empirical research with concepts and insights from multiple fields such as economics, law, political sciences and regulation. In consequence, the book addresses anyone interested in patenting incentives and motives and their impact on the functional change and regulatory effectiveness of patents in polycentric regulatory environments. About the author: With a background in institutional economics and philosophy of science, Michael Neumann joined the DFG graduate school on "Intellectual Property and the Public Domain" and the MPI for Innovation and Competition to write this doctoral thesis. He now works as a consultant on research and innovation policy. .

Abstract

"This book is a must read to understand the pitfalls of relying solely on financial innovation to solve the climate crisis." (Matthew Paterson, University of Manchester) "...an emphatic call for rethinking finance to advance a just energy transition" Mzukisi Qobo, Wits University) "A truly enlightening and empirically rich account of a green bond market that wasn't...." (Daniel Mertens, University Osnabrück) "...required reading for scholars of just transitions in the Global South." (Daniela Gabor, UWE Bristol) Funding low-carbon transitions to address climate change is one of the major challenges of our time. Green bonds have emerged as a powerful tool to enlist institutional investors' wealth for these transitions. But despite exponential growth in many parts of the world, the green bond market in South Africa has been stalling. This book grapples with this puzzle: It debunks some of the promises underpinning green bond markets globally and traces the manifold practices undergirding its promotion. It then identifies some barriers prohibiting the expansion of green bonds in emerging markets and zooms in on the depoliticizing tendencies a transition premised on financial innovation produces. In the last part, this work discloses the idiosyncratic political economic challenges of a fossil-based economy in transition and shines a light on the competing elements of a 'green' and a 'just' transition. In so doing, this book contributes important new qualitative insights into green bond markets-in-the-making and extends political economic scholarship on finance-led transition endeavors in emerging economies. Chapters 3 and 6 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com. Manuel Neumann is a Senior Policy Officer at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. He did his PhD at Kassel University and was a visiting scholar at Wits University in Johannesburg in 2018 and 2019. Beforehand, he worked in the development context in Geneva and Kathmandu and studied in London (M.Sc.), New Delhi, and Tübingen (B.Sc.). His research revolves around green financial innovation and the political economy of energy transitions in the global South.
