Abstract

This book observes that a key determinant of Europe's welfare over the coming decades will be how the region manages crises, both financial and societal. It examines how key institutional developments, such as Economic and Monetary Union, reflected differentiated integration (DI) in the EU, but argues that modern-day risks are highly interconnected, and their management therefore has to be inclusive. In that connection it looks in particular at the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), whose mandate to protect financial stability also gives it relevance with regard to other crises. The book considers that the strengthening of this institution, and bringing it to the fore, would help EU member states, as well as countries around the EU including applicant nations, to manage financial and societal risks, including COVID-19 and the transition to a green economy, thus safeguarding the economies of Europe. It builds on a model of the EU allowing for DI in some activities, while ensuring sound governance arrangements between those inside and those outside that activity, and embodying inclusivity in the fundamentals of the EU, including in the management of risk. Charles Enoch is the European Studies Centre Fellow at St Antony's College, University of Oxford, UK, and Previous Deputy Director, International Monetary Fund, and Senior Advisor, Bank of England, UK. .

Abstract

Edited by two leading experts on the languages of West Africa, this volume is the very first book to handle a range of topics in the syntax of Kwa, a branch of the Niger-Congo language family spoken by approximately 20 million people in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin and in the extreme southwestern corner of Nigeria. Kwa includes a total of 45 related languages. The nine chapters each address a separate grammatical aspect of Kwa. These range from topics such as the verb phrase, argument structure, verb serialization and complex predicates, to discussions on tense, mood, and aspect and their relation to the structure of sentences. Also addressed are the structure of the noun phrase and the syntax of discourse particles. The studies in this volume demonstrate that Kwa languages offer a very rich empirical domain for linguistic theorizing. In this book, experts who are mostly native speakers present empirical data and show its theoretical relevance to comparative linguistics and comparative syntax. The book brings together a wealth of material and fresh insights and is a superb example of how empirical research feeds into typological and theoretical linguistics. As such, it is a gold mine to students and teachers of comparative syntax, as well as for anyone interested in studies on Niger Congo languages.

Abstract

This book provides an evidence-based approach to understanding declining levels of employee engagement, offering a set of practices that individuals and organizations can adopt in order to improve productivity and organizational performance. It introduces a model outlining how the experience of meaningful work impacts engagement and other organizational attitudes and behaviors. It recognizes the antecedents and consequences of such behavior, recognizing that they must be considered as components of an organizational system rather than in isolation. It will be useful for scholars and practitioners in identifying and remedying the endemic trend of disconnected workers and their negative impact on organizational goals.  .

Abstract

The situation for career counselors today is particularly complex. Transformational areas such as the Corona pandemic, the climate crisis, the economic situation, and an aging population are bringing rapid changes to the demands of the labor market. This book addresses the challenges in the European labor market from the multinational perspective of career counselors. It includes multiple contributions from different countries that address the country-specific challenges that generate support and development needs for counselors. Measures, solution strategies and future forecasts are included. The contributions are based on the Academia+ project, in which a total of three online training series for career counselors from across Europe on the topics of "Counseling Migrants and Refugees," "Future Jobs," and "Demographic Change" were conducted and evaluated. The book is intended to be a guide for professionals in the vocational training field and to facilitate and support a practice-oriented initial interview from the counselor's point of view.
