Goede zorg aan het levenseinde krijgt door verschillende maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen almaar meer aandacht in onze samenleving. De toenemende vergrijzing is hierin een belangrijke factor. Er is ook de vaststelling dat infectieziekten plaats maken voor chronische ziekten, waardoor het beeld van ziekte en sterven in ons land aanzienlijk zal wijzigen, en de duur van het stervensproces toeneemt. Daarnaast komen steeds vaker medisch-ethische vragen rond palliatieve zorg, terminale sedatie, therapeutische hardnekkigheid en euthanasie op de voorgrond. Maar ondanks die groeiende aandacht voor het domein van de levenseindezorg, blijken de omstandigheden van overlijden en de kwaliteit van het levenseinde van patiënten onvoldoende in kaart gebracht. In België weten we tot nu toe bijzonder weinig over hoe goed mensen sterven en welke zorg zij aan het einde van hun leven krijgen.Het sterfbed in België bevat een grote hoeveelheid nieuwe en representatieve gegevens over de omstandigheden van het overlijden en de levenseindezorg in België. Het beschrijft de resultaten van de SENTI-MELC studie, een samenwerking tussen de onderzoeksgroep Zorg rond het Levenseinde van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, en de Huisartsenpeilpraktijken, gecoördineerd vanuit het Wetenschappelijk Instituut Volksgezondheid. De studie die in dit boek wordt beschreven, is uniek in zijn opzet, niet alleen in België, maar ook in Europa. Het onderzoek brengt voor België, Vlaanderen, Wallonië en Brussel in kaart waar mensen verblijven in de laatste levensfase, hoe vaak ze tussen verschillende zorgplaatsen verhuizen, en waar ze uiteindelijk sterven. We bestuderen ook wie voor patiënten zorgt aan het levenseinde en of er gespecialiseerde palliatieve zorg wordt ingezet. We onderzoeken de symptomen die patiënten ervaren in de laatste levensfase, evenals de specifieke behandelingen en zorg die ze krijgen. We gaan ook in op de medische beslissingen rond het levenseinde met een zeker of mogelijk levensverkortend effect.Het sterfbed in België informeert professionele en niet-professionele zorgverleners, beleidsmakers én de publieke opinie over de manier waarop de huidige zorg rond het levenseinde georganiseerd is en biedt aanknopingspunten en advies om deze levenseindezorg te verbeteren.

In the last decade health care has witnessed a host of technological novelties in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic practices, as well as in the supportive information and communication technology and in various applications of genetics, microbiology and informatics. As a result a few questions need to be answered: -Is health care ethics due dor a splitting up into an ethics of technology (focusing on the ethical implications of new technologies) and an ethics of care (focusing on the ethical problems concerning chronic diseases, decay, disability, end of life)? -How to cope with dependence, limitation, finiteness, suffering, ... in spite of technological progress? -Could a better integration of technology and care preclude situations where patients are being dehumanised? Starting with a philosophical ethical reflection about the possibilities and dangers of technologies in health care, this book highlights both the relation between technology and care, and the normative aspects of economic analyses in health care. Finally, a series of concrete examples from various clinical fields (prenatal diagnosis, genetic tests, digital imaging in psychiatry, tube feeding in care for the elderly, and palliative sedation) will help the authors to consider how to integrate these technologies in a care context aimed upon humaneness. Since each topic is analysed by leading European clinicians and health care ethicists, this book clearly stands for the interdisciplinary approach in health care ethics. This book may be a rich source of material for reflection on the role, meaning and ends of technology and care, as harmonious aspects of clinical health care practice. However, the authors main concern is to show what such a reflection may consist of and how it can contribute to the inquiry into the experience of technology, the needs of humanity and the development of appropriate health care.
