Children are the most criminally victimized segment of the population, and a substantial number face multiple, serious "poly-victimizations" during a single year. And despite the fact that the priority emphasis in academic research and government policy has traditionally gone to studying juvenile delinquents, children actually appear before authorities more frequently as victims than as offenders. But at the same time, the media and many advocates have failed to note the good news: rates of sexual abuse, child homicide, and many other forms of victimization declined dramatically after the mid-1990s, and some terribly feared forms of child victimization, like stereotypical stranger abduction, are remarkably uncommon. The considerable ignorance about the realities of child victimization can be chalked up to a field that is fragmented, understudied, and subjected to political demagoguery. In this persuasive book, David Finkelhor presents a comprehensive new vision to encompass the prevention, treatment, and study of juvenile victims, unifying conventional subdivisions like child molestation, child abuse, bullying, and exposure to community violence. De hulpverlener is door zijn behandelrelatie en expertise de aangewezen persoon om een inschatting te maken van de wilsbekwaamheid van zijn patiënt ten aanzien van een medische beslissing. Deze inschatting is een ingewikkelde kwestie die snel aanleiding geeft tot discussie. De internationaal erkende MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool (MacCAT) maakt het mogelijk om de beoordeling van wilsbekwaamheid in de klinische praktijk te standaardiseren. Dit semi-gestructureerde interview is een niet meer weg te denken hulpmiddel bij het bepalen of patiënten wilsbekwaam zijn om informed consent voor behandeling (MacCAT-T) of deelname aan onderzoek (MacCAT-CR) te geven. Over het moeilijke trajectverloop in de jeugdhulpverlening is reeds heel wat gedebatteerd. Telkens wordt dit debat echter enkel gevoerd op basis van signalen, bij gebrek aan onderzoek terzake.Dit boek brengt hier verandering in. Het brengt de hulpverleningstrajecten in kaart van minderjarigen met psychische problemen gevolgd door de jeugdrechtbank. Hiervoor werd een uitgebreide dossierstudie op de jeugdrechtbank in Gent uitgevoerd. Daarbij blijken onstabiele trajecten, anders dan verwacht, eerder de uitzondering dan de regel.Slechts een minderheid van de minderjarigen doorloopt onstabiele trajecten, die zich kenmerken door een hoog aantal trajectveranderingen en de afwezigheid van stabiele perioden.Er zijn verschillende factoren voor deze onstabiliteit, zo blijkt uit dit onderzoek: het profiel van de minderjarige, de hulpverleningssector, het gebrek aan hulpverlening en zelfs de verslaggeving in de dossiers op de jeugdrechtbank. Op basis van de bevindingen uit dit onderzoek, geeft de auteur concrete aanbevelingen voor de jeugdhulpverlening, en in het bijzonder voor het beleid, hulpverleners en jeugdrechters.
