Het gangbare denken over roesmiddelen bij het niet-gebruikende publiek, de professionele hulpverlening en het politioneel-justitieel apparaat is vaak gebaseerd op veralgemeningen van de slechtst denkbare scenario’s die niet stroken met de realiteit van typisch druggebruik. Ook het homogene beeld dat de media van druggebruikers ophangt, strookt niet met het wetenschappelijke onderzoek dat juist de heterogeniteit van druggebruikers, stammende uit vele, sociaal uiteenlopende milieus, aantoont. Het fenomeen van drugsgebruik en -misbruik is echter complexer dan we denken. De maatschappelijke en politieke discussie omtrent cannabis is sedert een aantal jaren weer fel opgelaaid. De media-aandacht voor de strafrechtelijke aanpak van cannabisgebruikers is groot, maar de verwarring, nog versterkt door de onduidelijke communicatie vanwege politici, heeft geleid tot een reductie van het debat. Alles wordt herleid tot een discussie tussen zij die cannabisgebruik banaliseren en zij die cannabisgebruik demoniseren. Vanuit een streven naar een verwetenschappelijking van het onderzoeksterrein ‘drugs’, een beter inzicht in de complexiteit van roesmiddelengebruik, én een meer evenwichtig politiek en maatschappelijk debat, tracht dit boek een breed gamma van onderzoeksgegevens omtrent cannabis te presenteren, op basis van een grote steekproef van ervaren cannabisgebruikers (369 geïnterviewden), die reeds lang met het product omgaan. Het perspectief van de roesmiddelengebruiker zelf (‘the insider’s view’) krijgt daarbij de aandacht die het verdient. Niet slechts risico, gevaar of schade worden als uitgangspunt genomen. This is the first scholarly study in which the production, trade and political effects of opium and its derivatives are shown over many centuries, and in many countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, all Southeast Asian countries and some in Europe and the Americas). Starting in the 16th century, slavery and opium became the two means with which the bodies and souls of men and women in the tropics were exploited in western imperialism and colonialism. The first waned with the abolition movement in the 19th century, but opium production and trade continued to spread, with the associated serious social and political effects. Around 1670 the Dutch introduced opium as a cash crop for mass production and distribution in India and Indonesia. China became the main target in the 19th century, and only succeeded in getting rid of the opium problem around 1950. Then it had already been transformed from an “Eastern” into a “Western” problem.
