L'étude des premières sociétés gravettiennes fournit un éclairage original sur les processus culturels affectant ces populations entre 31 000 et 27 000 BP. La comparaison des séries lithiques de La Gravette, Puy Jarrige et La Vigne Brun met en évidence une tradition technique cohérente qui définit la première composante gravettienne en France et dans certains pays limitrophes. La parenté existant entre ces séries implique des liens étroits et directs que le gisement de La Vigne Brun permet d'appréhender. Le développement de ces pratiques peut être recherché dans plusieurs phénomènes relativement synchrones affectant l'ensemble de ces groupes à la fin de l'Aurignacien. Le gisement de l'abri Pataud met en évidence de tels changements. Mais ces modifications du système technique lithique ne peuvent être perçues comme le fruit d'une évolution graduelle. En effet, plusieurs composantes distinctes s'insèrent entre ce qui est dénommé Aurignacien et Gravettien : le "complexe à pointes de Font-Yves" et le Bayacien.

The Union Internationale des Sciences Pré- et Protohistoriques (UISPP) commission on "Flint Mining in Pre- and Protohistoric Times" was created at the 12th meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (Cracow, Poland, 19th-24th September 2006). The aim was to perpetuate the tradition of organizing international symposia on flint, established by the Limburg Branch of the Dutch Geological Society in 1969 at Maastricht. The commission intends to maintain cooperation in archaeological research on siliceous rock mining (flint, chert, hornstone, radiolarite, jasper and obsidian), by presenting and discussing methods and results. Major fields of interest include the different stages of chaînes opératoires of manufacture, specialisation of labour and circulation of raw materials, as well as the study of flint mining sites in relation to pre- and protohistoric settlement patterns. The objective of the commission is to promote these lines of research into flint mining and its methods, thus enabling a better understanding of the various phenomena and processes taking place in pre- and protohistoric times. This volume contains the papers of the Paris conference held on 10th-11th September 2012, together with some additional papers presented at Vienna 2010 and Florianópolis 2011. A first set of contributions concerns the main topic of the conference, which was lithothèques and reference collections. A further group of papers concerns the second conference theme: workshops, from excavation to chaînes opératoires reconstruction.

The life history of stone tools is intimately linked to tool production, use and maintenance. These are important processes in the organization of lithic technology, or the manner in which lithic technology is embedded within human organizational strategies of land use and subsistence practices. This volume brings together essays that measure the life history of stone tools relative to retouch values, raw material constraints and evolutionary processes. Collectively, they explore the association of technological organization with facets of tool form such as reduction sequences, tool production effort, artifact curation processes and retouch measurement. Data sets cover a broad geographic and temporal span, including examples from France during the Paleolithic, the Near East during the Neolithic, and other regions such as Mongolia, Australia, and Italy. North American examples are derived from Paleoindian times to historic period aboriginal populations throughout the United States and Canada.
