Si le personnage du comte Dracula parle à tout le monde, peut-être est-ce moins le cas de Vlad III Basarab, dit "l'Empaleur". Pourtant, le vampire de Bram Stoker s'inspire directement de ce prince de Valachie aux méthodes sanguinaires, qui régna durant le XVe siècle. Bien qu'il soit resté célèbre pour avoir souvent eu recours à la torture dite du "pal", on méconnaît cependant sa véritable personnalité. Ce portrait se veut aussi véridique que possible : basé sur des sources historiques, cautionné par l'historien et chercheur au CNRS Matei Cazacu, il propose une vision instructive et humoristique de ce "fils du Dragon" si décrié. Vlad III (1429 ou 1430-1476), dit « l’empaleur », prince de Valachie (Roumanie), est une figure pleine de contradictions : pieu et cruel, politicien à la fois subtil et brutal. Un personnage complexe, vivant dans un monde déséquilibré… Cette première biographie historique de Dracula dévoile les multiples interprétations qui ont été faites de cette « figure » du XVe siècle : voïévode pour les historiens, tyran sanguinaire pour ceux qui ont manipulé son image au gré des intérêts politiques, vampire romantique enfin pour les écrivains et les cinéastes… Outre de nombreux documents d’époque, on trouvera en fin de volume Capitaine vampire, le roman dont s’est inspiré Bram Stoker pour son Dracula. The responsive subject is an exhibition and a publication curated and edited by FormContent-London, initiated by Mu.ZEE-Ostend for Contemporary Art Heritage Flanders (CAHF).

Invited by Mu.ZEE to propose an exhibition and a publication based on the Museum's collection, FormContent decided to focus its research on the inheritance left by the Belgian artist Guy Mees (1935-2003) and to present a selection of his oeuvre alongside artworks of João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Ian Kiaer and Gyan Panchal.

A striking element is Guy Mees' purposely avoidance of any fixed reading on his own practice that could assist us in the navigation through his work. Although his importance has been recognised in Belgium since the early 1970s, the artist's reluctancy to align his aesthetics to an univocal interpretation, has generated a certain mystery around his work.

How should we Guy Mees' legacy today? Is it possible and appropriate not to adopt an analytical approach, but rather focus on a synaesthetic attitude towards the works? This reader presents parallel lines between Guy Mees' oeuvre and contributions addressing similar problematics and sensitivities.
