"Lorsqu’il révise des textes bibliques grecs et qu’ensuite, soucieux de revenir à la vérité hébraïque dans le sillage d’Origène, il traduit directement de l’hébreu au latin des livres de l’Ancien Testament, Jérôme accompagne ses travaux de Préfaces, au nombre desquelles le célèbre prologus galeatus. Ces textes généralement brefs, ainsi que quelques préfaces qui ne sont pas de Jérôme, ont été transmis tout au long du Moyen Âge dans les manuscrits bibliques ; ils figurent encore dans la Bible latine établie au Concile de Trente (1546), celle que l’on appellera désormais Vulgate. Sont donc ici réunis des textes fondamentaux pour comprendre le travail du moine de Bethléem (env. 386-406), et plus largement l’histoire de la Bible latine. Abondamment annotés, ils sont introduits par une riche synthèse des connaissances actuelles sur les versions latines des Écritures. Le lecteur disposera ainsi d’un outil de travail précieux pour mieux appréhender les textes que lisaient et commentaient les Pères de l’Église d’Occident – un outil susceptible de rendre au latin la place qui lui revient dans les études bibliques. Face au thème de la mort, Grégoire de Nysse s'est exprimé aussi bien comme pasteur et prédicateur que comme philosophe et théologien. Certaines occasions étaient solennelles. Les trois oraisons funèbres de ce volume ont en effet été prononcées à Constantinople, en présence de l'empereur Théodose. La première porte sur Mélèce d'Antioche, qui présidait en mai 381 le concile de Constantinople I, la deuxième sur l'impératrice Flacilla et la troisième sur Pulchérie, la fille de l'empereur.Transposant sur le plan de la foi les motifs rhétoriques de louange et les arguments philosophiques de consolation, Grégoire y trouve l'occasion de traiter de politique ecclésiastique et de dresser un portrait modèle de la souveraine chrétienne. Le traité Sur les enfants morts prématurément approfondit la question du sort des défunts en s'attaquant à un problème fréquemment traité par des auteurs païens : comment justifier l'inégalité des vies humaines, la longue vie des méchants et la mort précoce des enfants ? Grégoire répond, comme les stoïciens, en se référant à la providence et à la finalité universelle, mais son explication en appelle surtout à la capacité de l'âme de comprendre Dieu : cette capacité, qui ne cesse de croître tout au long de la vie, si l'âme regarde vers Dieu et se purifie, doit se poursuivre dans l'éternité, tant pour les adultes que pour les enfants morts prématurément, tous promis à la béatitude.

Jerome's Epitaph on Saint Paula (Epitaphium Sanctae Paulae) is one of the most famous writings by one of the most prolific authors in all of Latin antiquity. Composed in 404, it is an elaborate eulogy commemorating the life of Paula (347-404), a wealthy Christian widow from Rome who renounced her senatorial status and embraced a lifestyle of ascetic self-discipline and voluntary poverty. She used her vast inherited fortune to fund various charitable causes and to co-found with Jerome, in 386, a monastic complex in Bethlehem which was equipped with a hostelry for Christian pilgrims. The Epitaphium is one of the core primary texts on female spirituality (both real and idealized) in Late Antiquity, and it also is one of Jerome's crowning literary achievements, yet until now it has not received the depth of scholarly analysis that only a proper commentary can afford. This book presents the first full-scale commentary on this monumental work in any language. Cain accesses a very extensive array of ancient sources to fully contextualize the Epitaphium and he comprehensively addresses stylistic, literary, historical, topographical, theological, text-critical and other issues of interpretive interest, including relevant matters of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin philology. Considerable effort also is expended on extricating the elusive Paula of history from the sticky web of Jerome's idealized hagiographic construct of her. Accompanying the commentary is an introduction which situates the Epitaphium in the broader context of its author's life and work and exposes its various propagandistic dimensions. The critical Latin text and the facing-page translation will make the Epitaphium more accessible than ever before and will provide a reliable textual apparatus for future scholarship on this key Hieronymian writing.
