Les Tables faciles de Ptolémée ont exercé, dans l’histoire de l’astronomie ancienne, une influence au moins égale à la Syntaxe mathématique (Almageste). Cette oeuvre comprenait un petit manuel expliquant le mode d’emploi de ces tables, ainsi que les tables elles-mêmes. Si le manuel a déjà fait l’objet d’une édition critique par Heiberg, dans les Opera astronomica minora de Ptolémée (1907), les tables elles-mêmes ne sont accessibles que dans l’ancienne édition, peu fiable, de l’abbé Nicolas Halma (1822 -1825)

Composé à Constantinople vers 619 apr. J.-C., le commentaire aux Tables Faciles de Ptolémée attribué à Stéphanos d'Alexandrie est le premier traité byzantin d'astronomie. Il s'agit d'un mode d'emploi des tables de Ptolémée, rédigé dans un cadre scolaire et laissé à l'état de première ébauche. Fondé sur le Petit Commentaire de Théon d'Alexandrie, le texte est une adaptation des calculs astronomiques aux coordonnées de la capitale byzantine. L'auteur livre les procédés de calcul à partir des Tables Faciles ainsi qu'un exemple pour chaque problème astronomique. L'originalité du manuel est le nombre d'exemples donnés, l'emploi de tables spéciales pour le climat de Byzance et de l'ère chronologique de Constantin le Grand, et l'ajout de quelques scolies par l'empereur Héraclius.

Ptolemy's comprehensive treatises on astronomy and geography were influential for nearly two millennia. Equally influential was his treatise on harmonics, the ancient science which combined and brought to completion the study of philosophy and science. This volume offers a comprehensive English translation and commentary of Ptolemy's Harmonics . The treatise begins with Ptolemy's study of pitches and intervals, for which he extracts both an idealized musical scale and a new acoustical tool. After discussing modulation, he expands his horizons by applying musical intervals to the human soul and celestial bodies, ultimately describing a cosmic harmony. The English translation faithfully reproduces Ptolemy's style and includes all the charts surviving in the manuscript tradition. The commentary offers a full exegesis of the text, loci paralleli, and citations of modern scholarly sources.
