If Justus Lipsius’s Politica of 1589 and its importance to the history of political thought needs no introduction, Lipsius's Monita et exempla politica (1605), conceived as a sequel to the Politica, has been overlooked time and again despite the fact that it is a unique key to understand the precise character of Lipsius's political thought. For, is his widely read political dialogue a Neostoic discourse or is it Tacitean, Machiavellian, or even anti-Machiavellian in nature? Did the work play such a pivotal role in the genesis of the modern, centrally governed nation state, as some scholars tend to believe? This book collects essays by scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds.

In 17th-century intellectual life, the ideas of the Renaissance humanist Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) were omnipresent. The publication of his 'Politica' in 1589 had made Lipsius?s name as an original and controversial political thinker. The sequel, the 'Monita et exempla politica' ('Admonitions'), published in 1605, was meant as an illustration of Lipsius?s political thought as expounded in the 'Politica'. Its aim was to offer concrete models of behavior for rulers against the background of Habsburg politics.0Lipsius?s later political treatise also forms an indispensable key to interpret the place and function of the 'Politica' in Lipsius?s political discourse and in early modern political thought. The 'Admonitions' ? widely read, edited and translated in the 17th and 18th centuries ? show Lipsius?s pivotal role in the genesis of modern political philosophy.

In this study Natasha Constantinidou considers the views the scholars Pierre Charron (1541-1603), Justus Lipsius (1547-1606), Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623) and King James VI and I (1566-1625) articulated in response to the religious ruptures of their time. Though rarely juxtaposed, all four authors were deeply affected by the religious divisions. They denounced religious zeal, focusing on non-dogmatic piety. Drawing on classical tradition and church history, they set out to offer consolation to the people of a war-torn continent and discuss means of reconciliation. Their responses sought to define the role of religion in public and private. They emphasised the need for lay control of religious affairs as the only way of ensuring peace, whilst circumscribing belief and its practice to the private realm.

The book series reflects the rich variety of Neo-Latin literature and the wide range of Neo-Latin scholarship as it is thriving today. Most importantly, Supplementa Humanistica Lovaniensia propose critical editions (with introductions, preferably with commentaries and translations) of humanistic (c. 1350-c. 1650) and post-humanistic (c. 1650-c. 1950) Latin texts. The series also offers a forum to contemporary Neo-Latin, presenting first editions of belletristic works. Furthermore, it warmly welcomes original scholarly studies on Neo-Latin texts or genres, as well as Neo-Latin tools, such as anthologies or comprehensive bibliographies. Internationally oriented, it accepts both monographs and thematically coherent volumes in English, French, German, Italian and Latin. It aims to publish at least one volume a year. Priority is given to manuscripts not exceeding 120.000 words in length. --
