This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 12th British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD-12), held at Surrey, Guildford in July 1994. The BNCOD conferences are thought as a platform for exchange between theoreticians and practitioners, where researchers from academia and industry meet professionals interested in advanced database applications. The 13 refereed papers presented in the proceedings were selected from 47 submissions; they are organized in chapters on temporal databases, formal approaches, parallel databases, object-oriented databases, and distributed databases. In addition there are two invited presentations: "Managing open systems now that the "Glashouse" has gone" by R. Baker and "Knowledge reuse through networks of large KBs" by P.M.D. Gray.

This monograph presents the still young, but already large and very active interdisciplinary realm of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) in a systematic and well-balanced way. Besides technical progress also the cultural, social, legal, psychological and economic aspects of CSCW are discussed. The book makes accessible a wealth of information and culminates in the development and detailed discussion of a "Collaboratory" suitable to fulfil the needs of scientific cooperation in Europe. The book addresses CSCW research and development professionals as well as the general scientist interested in CSCW-based scientific cooperation. The bibliography with its more than 600 entries and the subject index are particularly comprehensive and helpful.

CAiSE '91, held at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in May 1991, is the third in a series of conferences on advanced information systems engineering. The call for papers for CAiSE '91 was given a wide international distribution. The programme committee was chosen from very well reputed researchers in the international information systems engineering community, as well as key professionals in European industrial and consultant companies. The number and quality of papers submitted was very satisfactory, and 29 papers were selected for publication in this volume.
