This volume contains a general introduction, English translation of and philological-historical commentary on an anonymous 7th- century A.D. hagiographical text entitled: An Account of the Miracles of the Holy and Glorious Megalomartyr and Wonder-worker Artemios. Also included is a photographic reproduction of the Greek text edited by A. Papadopoulos-Kerameus originally published by the Russian Academy as well as a supplementary essay by John Haldon. The general introduction discusses the historical persona of St. Artemios whose healing activities are predominantly centered on the Church of St. John Prodromos in Constantinople and who "specializes" in healing hernias and diseases affecting the genitals of mostly male patients. This book will interest students of Greek (especially Byzantine) philology, history, hagiography and medicine. As it contains a translation of the original Byzantine Greek text, it should also appeal to those seeking to improve their knowledge of Byzantine Greek.

How does religious healing work, if indeed it does? In this study of the contemporary North American movement known as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Thomas Csordas investigates the healing practices of a modern religious movement to provide a rich cultural analysis of the healing experience. This is not only a book about healing, however, but also one about the nature of self and self- transformation. Blending ethnographic data and detailed case studies, Csordas examines processes of sensory imagery, performative utterance, orientation, and embodiment. His book forms the basis for a rapprochement between phenomenology and semiotics in culture theory that will interest anthropologists, philosophers, psychologists, physicians, and students of comparative religion and healing.

"Images of Miraculous Healing in the Early Modern Netherlands explores the ways in which paintings and prints of biblical miracles shaped viewers' approaches to physical and sensory impairments and bolstered their belief in supernatural healing and charitable behavior. Drawing upon a vast range of sources, Kaminska demonstrates that visual imagery held a central place in premodern disability discourses, and that the exegesis of New Testament miracle stories determined key attitudes toward the sick and the poor. Addressed to middle-class collectors, many of the images analyzed in this study have hitherto been neglected by art historians"--4e de couv.
