Historical research in previous decades has done a great deal to explore the social and political context of early modern natural and moral inquiries. Particularly since the publication of Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer’s Leviathan and the Air-Pump (1985) several studies have attributed epistemological stances and debates to clashes of political and theological ideologies. The present volume suggests that with an awareness of this context, it is now worth turning back to questions of the epistemic content itself. The contributors to the present collection were invited to explore how certain non-epistemic values had been turned into epistemic ones, how they had an effect on epistemic content, and eventually how they became ideologies of knowledge playing various roles in inquiry and application throughout early modern Europe.

This volume describes and evaluates the latest theories, empirical findings, and applications in the field of pragmalinguistics developed in some socialist states of Europe - mainly in Czechoslovakia, Poland, the German Democratic Republic, and the USSR. The results of the author's own research in pragmatically oriented psycholinguistics are included as well. The main approaches through which the pragmalinguistic studies have been performed in Eastern Europe are those of functional stylistics, textlinguistics, rhetorics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, social communication theory, and semiotics. Much attention is devoted in the book to applied research, mainly in the spheres of education and instruction, mass communication and propaganda.

The roots of pragmatics reach back to Antiquity, especially to rhetoric as one of the three liberal arts. However, until the end of the 18th century proto-pragmatic insights tended to be consigned to the pragmatic, that is rhetoric, wastepaper basket and thus excluded from serious philosophical consideration. It can be said that pragmatics was conceived between 1780 and 1830 in Britain, but also in Germany and in France in post-Lockian and post-Kantian philosophies of language. These early 'conceptions' of pragmatics are described in the first part of the book. The second part of the

The ideas that mark modern-day pragmatics are old, but did not start to get more systematically developed until the 1960's and 1970's. Still, the very recognition of pragmatics as a self-standing academic discipline is a product of the 1980's, not least made possible by the establishment of the International Pragmatics Association. One scholar in particular has devoted his life both to IPrA and to the discipline. This volume pays homage to Jef Verschueren on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It celebrates him for his long-standing dedication as Secretary General of IPrA and for his scholarly...
