Onbeschrijfelijke taferelen. Alle operatiezalen werken tegelijk. Overal bloed. Soms liggen drie gewonden in twee bedden.

This is the first full-length critical study of Paradd's End , the epic novel of the First World War, originally published in 4 volumes between 1924 and 1928, by the author and critic Ford Madox Ford. These 10 newly commissioned essays by critics focus on the psychological effects of the war, both upon Ford himself and upon his novel: its characters, its themes, and its form. The chapters explore: Ford's pioneering analysis of war trauma, trauma theory, shell shock, memory and repression, insomnia, empathy, therapy, literary Impressionism, and literary style. Other writers discussed alongside Ford include Conrad, Siegfried Sassoon, May Sinclair, Rebecca West, and Virginia Woolf as well as theorists William James, Freud, W. H. R. Rivers, Deleuze and Guattari, and Michel Foucault.

This is the first book to study the cultural impact of the Armistice of 11 November 1918. It contains 14 new essays from scholars working in literature, music, art history and military history. The Armistice brought hopes for a better future, as well as sadness, disappointment and rage. Many people in all the combatant nations asked hard questions about the purpose of the war. These questions are explored in complex and nuanced ways in the literature, music and art of the period. This book revisits the silence of the Armistice and asks how its effect was to echo into the following decades. The essays are genuinely interdisciplinary and are written in a clear, accessible style.
