In de afgelopen dertig jaar is prof. dr. G.W. Meijnen actief geweest in onderzoek en advisering op het terrein van de sociale ongelijkheid en het onderwijs. Bij de aanvang van zijn emeritaat als hoogleraar onderwijskunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam is deze bundel aangeboden waarin bijdragen staan van mensen die werkzaam zijn op het terrein van wetenschap, beleid en advies. De bijdragen bieden vanuit zeer uiteenlopende perspectieven zowel de resultaten van recent onderzoek alsook reflectie op onderzoek en beleid. Onderwerpen die in dit boek worden behandeld zijn, onder meer, schoolsegregatie en de positie van migranten in hoogontwikkelde landen, onderwijsongelijkheid in Midden- en Oost-Europa, recent onderzoek naar ongelijke onderwijskansen, meritocratie en politieke elitevorming, een pleidooi voor lokaal onderwijsbeleid, de opvoedende universiteit, probleemleerlingen in het onderwijs, succesvolle allochtone leerlingen, sekseverschillen in het onderwijs, en integratie en religieuze scholen.
