This analytical volume examines the various aspects of "De emendanda vita monachica", combining this with the question of whether this text by Eusthatios of Thessalonica with its polemical fireworks and learned allusions was really intended for the monks of the diocese, who are portrayed as being uneducated, or was actually aimed at an unnamed readership. This question forms a leitmotif through the various chapters of the study in which the author locates the work historically within Eustathios' biography and the context of contemporary monastic life, analyzes its place in literary history together with the linguistic devices deployed to establish the different stylistic levels and to influence the psychology of the readers and paints in the theological and hermeneutic background. A detailed commentary is appended. This volume compliments the edition published in the series "Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae". Both volumes are available as a set .

In a detailed account, the archbishop and renowned scholar Eustathius of Thessalonica (probably 1115–1195) takes his monks severely to task, for in his eyes they fall far short of the ideals they professed in their monastic vows, particularly by engaging in business and being hostile to education and learning. With its Prolegomena, editorial work, and indexes, this new edition is a valuable source for Byzantinists. The volume also provides a German translation of the Greek text. In addition to this text, a commentary is published within the series "Supplementa Byzantina." Both volumes are available as a set .

"While there has been work on the nobility as patrons of monasteries, this is the first real study of them as patrons of parish churches, and is thus the first study to tackle the subject as a whole. Illustrated with a wealth of detail, it will become an indispensable work of reference for those interested in lay patronage and the Church more generally in the middle ages." Professor David Carpenter, Department of History, King's College London. This book provides the first full-length, integrated study of the ecclesiastical patronage rights of the nobility in medieval England. It examines the nature and extent of these rights, how they were used, why and for whom they were valuable, what challenges lay patrons faced, and how they looked to the future in making gifts to the Church. It takes as its focus the thirteenth century, a critical period for the survival and development of these rights, being a time of ambitious Church reform, of great change in patterns of land ownership in the ranks of the higher nobility, and of bold assertion by the English Crown of its claims to control Church property. The thirteenth century also saw a proliferation of record keeping on the part of kings, bishops and nobility, and the author uses new evidence from a range of documentary sources to explore the nature of the relationships between the English nobility, the Church and its clergy, a relationship in which patronage was the essential feature. Dr Elizabeth Gemmill is University Lecturer in Local History and Fellow of Kellogg College. University of Oxford.

The Observant Movement was a widespread effort to reform religious life across Europe. It took root around 1400, and for a century and more thereafter it inspired or shaped much that became central to European religion and culture. The Observants produced many of the leading religious figures of the later Middle Ages—Catherine of Siena, Bernardino of Siena and Savonarola in Italy, Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros in Spain, and in Germany Martin Luther himself. This volume provides scholars with a current, synthetic introduction to the Observant Movement. Its essays also seek collectively to expand the horizons of our study of Observant reform, and to open new avenues for future scholarship. Contributors are Michael D. Bailey, Pietro Delcorno, Tamar Herzig, Anne Huijbers, James D. Mixson, Alison More, Carolyn Muessig, Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli, Bert Roest, Timothy Schmitz, and Gabriella Zarri.
