Abstract

Publisher description: The issue of cultural literacy has been the subject of intense debate in the past two years. Several bestselling books about the deficiencies of our educational system as well as changes in basic curriculum at more than one major university have contributed to the fervor of this debate. Fueling the national controversy is the question of what body of knowledge constitutes cultural literacy. While many argue for a return to a "back to basics" curriculum, equally energetic voices call for a revised curriculum, one which embraces both traditional western classics and the classics of non-European cultures, among them African, Asian, and Latin American. This volume brings together thirteen essays which suggest the range of knowledge truly literate individuals need to possess. Essays by such writers as James Baldwin, Carlos Fuentes, Michelle Cliff, Paula Gunn Allen, Ishmael Reed, and Wendell Berry enlarge our perspective to include a variety of voices and heritages which contribute to the vibrant culture of the United States. Also included is a beginning list of names, places, dates, and concepts which are part and parcel of a multi-cultural fabric.

Abstract

In the last years numerous German-language texts written by authors of Eastern and Southeastern European origin appeared. This phenomenon, already referred to as the "eastward expansion of German-language literature" and the "eastern turn", indicates a diversification of contemporary literature that can no longer be adequately captured by a label such as "migration literature". Are there specific writing styles and perspectives in these texts and how is this mediated with their reception? At the same time, however, this raises the question of the status of an attribution of origin such as 'Eastern Europe'. This volume brings together contributions that examine these questions in theoretical perspective, with regard to the positioning of authors in the literary field and to book market dynamics, as well as in individual case studies.

Abstract

This study analyses how immigrant and ethnic-minority writers have challenged the understanding of certain national literatures and have markedly changed these. In other national contexts, ideologies and institutions have contained the challenge these writers pose to national literatures. Case studies of the emergence and recognition of immigrant and ethnic-minority writing come from fourteen national contexts. These include classical immigration countries, such as Canada and the United States, countries where immigration became an issue after World War II, such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany, as well as countries rarely discussed in this context, such as Brazil and Japan. Finally, this study uses these individual analyses to discuss this writing as an international phenomenon. Sandra R.G. Almeida, Maria Zilda F. Abstract

"Engaging current debates within the studies of life writing and of the nation-state, Writing the Roaming Subject focuses on a group of Canadian writers who pose questions about cultural difference and national identity while writing about their own lives and their own experiences of displacement. Joanne Saul uses the term 'biotext' to describe the unique form of writing that challenges critical practices regarding both life writing and immigrant and ethnic minority writing by blurring the borders of biography, autobiography, history, fiction, and theory, as well as poetry, prose, and visual representation."--Jacket.
