This book is the third of a series of five volumes that exhaustively brings together the writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) on contemporary art and artists. This collection of essays, written between 1974 and 1977 in the middle of the time of Duchamp's rediscovery in France, was published by Editions Galilée (Paris) in 1977 and in English translation by The Lapis Press (Los Angeles) in 1990. This volume republishes the two versions face to face, including the drawings, diagrams and images of the original edition. Herman Parret presents the text in a substantial introduction and Dalia Judovitz situates it in the more general framework of Lyotardian philosophical reflection. Duchamp's 'TRANS/formers' reconstructs the 'Large glass and given', Duchamp's two major works that glorify the body in its topological conceptuality.

Met de regelmaat van een klok, zo lijkt het wel, barsten controverses uit over nieuwe architectuurprojecten en hedendaagse ingrepen in geliefde monumenten. Het Gravensteen in Gent en het Steen in Antwerpen zijn twee recente voorbeelden van hoe architectuur een debat over kwaliteit uitlokt tot ver buiten academische of architectenkringen. Ook in Leuven, Aalst en Hasselt zijn er projecten die aanleiding geven tot passionele proteststemmen. Dit standpunt wil redeneringen en argumenten aanreiken om dergelijke discussies te kaderen, en zo met meer diepgang het maatschappelijk gesprek over architectuur te kunnen voeren. Het vertrekt van een nieuwe invulling van de traditionele gedachte dat architectuur berust op het gelukkig samengaan van functie, vorm en constructie. Deze drie termen worden hier geherinterpreteerd als verwijzingen naar maatschappelijke noden, betekeniswaarde en duurzaamheid. Een goed architectuurontwerp navigeert tussen deze vaak tegenstrijdige verwachtingen, en dat vereist van de architect een stevige dosis ontwerpintelligentie. Het vereist ook dat het gesprek over architectuur continu gaande blijft, want er bestaan geen wonderformules of algoritmes die een oordeel over architectuurkwaliteit eens en voorgoed kunnen vastleggen Evenmin kan men ervan uitgaan dat het hernemen van bepaalde historische vormentalen automatisch kwaliteit zou opleveren. De tekst wordt geïllustreerd met talrijke recent gebouwde projecten, die een concrete bijdrage leveren aan goede en betekenisvolle architectuur.
