Abstract

During the independence era in Mexico, individuals and factions of all stripes embraced the printing press as a key weapon in the broad struggle for political power. Taking readers into the printing shops, government offices, courtrooms, and streets of Mexico City, historian Corinna Zeltsman reconstructs the practical negotiations and discursive contests that surrounded print over a century of political transformation, from the late colonial era to the Mexican Revolution. Centering the diverse communities that worked behind the scenes at urban presses, and examining their social practices and aspirations, Zeltsman explores how printer interactions with state and religious authorities shaped broader debates about press freedom and authorship. Beautifully crafted and ambitious in scope, Ink under the Fingernails sheds new light on Mexico's histories of state formation and political culture, identifying printing shops as unexplored spaces of democratic practice, where the boundaries between manual and intellectual labor blurred.

Abstract

This book is a study of the complex relationship between Britain and Europe from the Second World War to the present day.Drawing on first-hand experience of British and European politics, the author highlights not only the dramatically shifting power play between London and Brussels but also the EU’s own struggle to come to terms with its federal mission. He traces the important constitutional events that have fashioned the EU, of which the Brexit process is an outstanding example. The author proposes a number of constitutional reforms which, if carried through, would form the basis of a new entente between the EU and the UK. Both polities will profit from stronger democratic government of a federal type. The author advocates spanning the divide between NATO and the EU. He proposes installing a new class of affiliate EU membership, which may be useful for the whole European neighbourhood, including the UK.Featuring the history, present and future of Britain’s relationship with the European Union, the book will be of worldwide interest to students and practitioners of European integration, as well as diplomats and journalists. It is the first comprehensive manifesto for the future of Europe and Britain since Brexit.

Abstract

"Long overlooked in histories of finance, women played an essential role in areas such as banking and the stock market during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet their presence sparked ongoing controversy. Hetty Green's golden touch brought her millions, but she outraged critics with her rejection of domesticity. Progressives like Victoria Woodhull, meanwhile, saw financial acumen as more important for women than the vote. George Robb's pioneering study sheds a light on the financial methods, accomplishments, and careers of three generations of women. Plumbing sources from stock brokers' ledgers to media coverage, Robb reveals the many ways women invested their capital while exploring their differing sources of information, approaches to finance, interactions with markets, and levels of expertise. He also rediscovers the forgotten women bankers, brokers, and speculators who blazed new trails--and sparked public outcries over women's unsuitability for the predatory rough-and-tumble of market capitalism. Entertaining and vivid with details, Ladies of the Ticker sheds light on the trailblazers who transformed Wall Street into a place for women's work."--

Abstract

"In Seeing Like a Citizen, Kara Moskowitz approaches Kenya's late colonial and early postcolonial eras as a single period of political, economic, and social transition. In focusing on rural Kenyans-the vast majority of the populace and the main targets of development interventions-as they actively sought access to aid, she offers new insights into the texture of political life in decolonizing Kenya and the early postcolonial world. Using multi-sited archival sources and oral histories focused on the western Rift Valley, Seeing Like a Citizen makes three fundamental contributions to our understanding of African and Kenyan history. First, it challenges the widely accepted idea of the gatekeeper state, revealing that state control remained limited and that the postcolonial state was an internally varied and often dissonant institution. Second, it transforms our understanding of postcolonial citizenship, showing that its balance of rights and duties was neither claimed nor imposed, but negotiated and differentiated. Third, it reorients Kenyan historiography away from central Kenya and elite postcolonial politics. The result is a powerful investigation of experiences of independence, of the meaning and form of development, and of how global political practices were composed and recomposed on the ground in local settings"--

Abstract

"During the Cold War, U.S. intervention in Latin American politics, economics, and society grew in scope and complexity, with diplomatic legacies evident in today's hemispheric policies. Development became a key form of intervention as government officials and experts from the United States and Latin America believed that development could foster hemispheric solidarity and security. In parts of Latin America, its implementation was especially intricate because recipients of these programs were diverse Indigenous peoples with their own politics, economics, and cultures. Contrary to project planners' expectations, Indigenous beneficiaries were not passive recipients but actively engaged with development interventions and, in the process, redefined racialized ideas about Indigeneity. Sarah Foss illustrates how this process transpired in Cold War Guatemala, spanning democratic revolution, military coups, and genocidal civil war"--

Abstract

Vulnerability management (VM) has been around for millennia. Cities, tribes, nations, and corporations have all employed its principles. The operational and engineering successes of any organization depend on the ability to identify and remediate a vulnerability that a would-be attacker might seek to exploit. What were once small communities became castles. Cities had fortifications and advanced warning systems. All such measures were the result of a group recognizing their vulnerabilities and addressing them in different ways. Today, we identify vulnerabilities in our software systems, infrastructure, and enterprise strategies. Those vulnerabilities are addressed through various and often creative means. Vulnerability Management demonstrates a proactive approach to the discipline. Illustrated with examples drawn from Park Foreman's more than three decades of multinational experience, the book demonstrates how much easier it is to manage potential weaknesses than to clean up after a violation. Covering the diverse realms that CISOs need to know and the specifics applicable to singular areas of departmental responsibility, he provides both the strategic vision and action steps needed to prevent the exploitation of IT security gaps, especially those that are inherent in a larger organization. Completely updated, the second edition provides a fundamental understanding of technology risks--including a new chapter on cloud vulnerabilities and risk management--from an interloper's perspective. This book is a guide for security practitioners, security or network engineers, security officers, and CIOs seeking understanding of VM and its role in the organization. To serve various audiences, it covers significant areas of VM. Chapters on technology provide executives with a high-level perspective of what is involved. Other chapters on process and strategy, although serving the executive well, provide engineers and security managers with perspective on the role of VM technology and processes in the success of the enterprise.

Abstract

"For many, the most authoritative history of US economic policy is told by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz, in their 1963 PUP book, A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960, as well as Alan Meltzer's multi-volume history of the Federal Reserve, published in 2003 and 2010. Both works were written by economists marshalling historical data to make an argument about what type of economic policy works best. Friedman and Schwartz's book led to the rise of monetarism, the idea that virtually the only thing governments can or should do when it comes to the economy is determine how much money to put in it. If there aren't enough jobs, for example, just put more money in the economy through bank lending, and businesses will hire more. There's no need for the government, the theory holds, to stimulate spending from the bottom up or encourage hiring or improve wages through any other means. These days, the concept of monetarism, though still a predominant policy framework, is seen by many as a very particular and narrow viewpoint, but there's no authoritative book on the level of Friedman and Schwartz that sets the record straight. In A Monetary and Fiscal History of the United States, 1961-2021, economist Alan Blinder lays out the history of US economic policy since Friedman and Schwartz, through the wider lens of the interaction between monetary and fiscal policy. He shows, decade by decade, that a powerful influence that the government has on the economy is not just through how much money it puts in it (monetary policy) but through decisions on how money is spent (fiscal policy). In this book Alan Blinder shifts the narrative dominance from monetarism and interest rates to a shared influence of monetary and fiscal policy, and he shows how the government has long been using various policies to stimulate spending, ranging from tax breaks and credits to direct checks to citizens. He does this from an insider's perspective, offering an authoritative history of US economic policy from Kennedy to COVID"--
