The second edition of Count Down is revised to include and discuss developments affecting the Big Four and their business model since the December 2015 release of the first edition. Brought into this updated narrative, for example, are: The Big Four's growth to collective global 2016 revenue of $128 billion, and the continued disparities in growth between their Audit and Advisory practices. The imposition of mandatory auditor rotation by legislation and regulation in the European Union, and in the US, the PCAOB's requirement to name lead partners on public company audits. New examples of corporate financial malfeasance and potentially disruptive auditor litigation, involving clients of each of the Big Four. In addition, this new edition expands in scope and details the required re-engineering by which - with the necessary mutual cooperation among financial statement issuers and users, the accounting profession, legislators, regulators and agencies of law enforcement - a sustainable structure for financial reporting and assurance might emerge -- that is, a Big Audit model truly fit to serve today's global capital markets.

« The society of captives », publié aux États-Unis en 1958, est rapidement devenu un classique de la sociologie carcérale, tant sur le plan des nouveautés théoriques que son auteur y développe que sur le plan méthodologique. La limpidité du propos, la brièveté du texte, le ton sobre teinté d’ironie de l’auteur en font aussi un modèle de restitution vivant et agréable des résultats d’une recherche ethnographique. Depuis soixante ans, cet ouvrage est devenu incontournable. Encore réédité en anglais en 2007, il demeure la référence la plus citée par les chercheurs qui s’intéressent à la prison. Il n’avait cependant jamais été traduit en français. Cette édition facilitera, aux étudiants et au public du monde francophone intéressé par les problématiques pénitentiaires, l’accès au chef-d’œuvre de Gresham M. Sykes. Cette traduction est par ailleurs "augmentée" puisque les coordinateurs ont demandé à des chercheurs contemporains, français et belges, de commenter chacun des sept chapitres de l’ouvrage original. Ces commentaires permettent de contextualiser et d’actualiser le savoir sur les prisons à propos de chacun des thèmes traités : la description du dispositif matériel et moral de la prison, le régime imposé par l’administration , les défaillances du contrôle total des surveillants sur les détenus, les souffrances de l’emprisonnement, les rôles sociaux que l’argot désigne, les conditions d’émergence et d’apaisement des émeutes et, enfin, les "recommandations" que Gresham M. Sykes a adressées aux réformateurs de son temps

The United States is facing the vexing challenge of a seemingly uncontrolled rise in the cost of health care. Total medical expenditures are rapidly approaching 20 percent of the gross domestic product and are crowding out other priorities of national importance. The use of increasingly expensive prescription drugs is a significant part of this problem, making the cost of biopharmaceuticals a serious national concern with broad political implications. Especially with the highly visible and very large price increases for prescription drugs that have occurred in recent years, finding a way to make prescription medicines--and health care at large--more affordable for everyone has become a socioeconomic imperative. Affordability is a complex function of factors, including not just the prices of the drugs themselves, but also the details of an individual's insurance coverage and the number of medical conditions that an individual or family confronts. Therefore, any solution to the affordability issue will require considering all of these factors together. The current high and increasing costs of prescription drugs--coupled with the broader trends in overall health care costs--is unsustainable to society as a whole. Making Medicines Affordable examines patient access to affordable and effective therapies, with emphasis on drug pricing, inflation in the cost of drugs, and insurance design. This report explores structural and policy factors influencing drug pricing, drug access programs, the emerging role of comparative effectiveness assessments in payment policies, changing finances of medical practice with regard to drug costs and reimbursement, and measures to prevent drug shortages and foster continued innovation in drug development. It makes recommendations for policy actions that could address drug price trends, improve patient access to affordable and effective treatments, and encourage innovations that address significant needs in health care.

Technology-focused acquisitions are an important complement to the firm's internal product development efforts. There is considerable heterogeneity when comparing individual technology-focused acquisitions - especially with respect to acquisition timing and the deal value. To resolve some of this heterogeneity the author introduces the novel distinction between performance- and functionality-focused acquisitions. He characterizes this distinction based on a theoretical analysis, a qualitative study, and turns to a sample of acquisitions in the field of artificial intelligence for the quantitative study. There are two key findings. First, performance-focused acquisitions take place earlier in a target's life cycle than functionality-focused ones. Second, the deal value is - at a comparable stage in a target's life cycle - higher for performance-focused acquisitions. This thesis is relevant for management scholars and managers alike: Scholars learn about the implications of the distinction between performance- and functionality-focused acquisitions on markets for technology. Managers gain insights into how this distinction may guide their strategic decision making.
