Abstract

New York City's identity as a cultural and artistic centre, as a point of arrival for millions of immigrants sympathetic to anarchist ideas, and as a hub of capitalism made the city a unique and dynamic terrain for anarchist activity. For 150 years, Gotham's cosmopolitan setting created a unique interplay between anarchism's human actors and an urban space that invites constant reinvention. Tom Goyens gathers essays that demonstrate anarchism's endurance as a political and cultural ideology and movement in New York from the 1870s to 2011.

Abstract

Crackdowns on local democracy are accelerating, as corporate and state interests continue efforts to repress social movements. In this well-timed book, Ben Price presciently reveals structures of power and law that facilitate blatant corporate supremacy in the United States. Price uses his years of experience as a community organizer and a careful reading of history to show how a legal paradigm that facilitated slavery and the fossil fuel economy has endured and adapted over time – today barricading our communities and squelching dissent. Many books have been written about wealth, power and politics in the United States. Most of them make intuitive sense. Wealthy people use their power to influence and control politics. But Ben Price's new book is often counterintuitive as he explores how wealth itself is imbued with power. He answers questions such as: How is the American Legislative Exchange Council – a modern states' rights, free market capitalist group – the intellectual and political descendant of George Washington's Federalist Party? How was the Fourteenth Amendment that emancipated African American slaves from their status as property used by a reactionary Supreme Court to grant legal “personhood” to private corporations? How are cities seen under our legal doctrine as “public corporations,” devoid of real governing authority? Further, Price identifies key counterrevolutions in U.S. history that squelched the transformative potential of the Civil War and American Revolution, and traces the roots of colonial and imperial systems of control. He links them to modern “free trade” agreements and other antidemocratic structures used to supersede democracy to this day. For some, this will come as no surprise. For others, it will be a rude, though necessary, awakening. “The white man's municipalities are just reservations, like ours,” said a resident of Pine Ridge Reservation, who Price spoke with. "The difference is, we know we live on reservations. The white man doesn't.” Crucially, Price shares insight into how social movements can plant seeds of a new legal system that makes the liberty, civil rights and dignity of humans and ecosystems its ultimate purpose. In fact, he introduces the reader to people who are doing just that.

Abstract

This book explores new frameworks, institutional arrangements, rules, and policies for governance of the digital world. As digitization rapidly intertwines the many dimensions of society, billions of people have witnessed a quiet and seamless integration of the Internet, software, platforms, algorithms, and digital devices into their daily lives, as well as into many forms of governance and decision making in the public and private sectors. The new technologies require new norms and practices to govern the digital world. This is the challenge addressed by this book: How can society create institutions that govern the digital world in a way that is beneficial to society? This book explores answers—still initial and provocative—to this central question. The reflections presented in this book have a theoretical and conceptual nature borrowed from different fields of science to identify the main challenges for the governance of the digital world. Fernando Filgueiras is Professor of Public Policy at the School of Public Policy and Government, Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), Brazil. Researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology – Digital Democracy (INCT-DD). Virgilio Almeida is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, and Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.

Abstract

This book presents a varied and multi-dimensional view of challenges of governance in Southeast Asia and ASEAN through the variety of disciplines and nationalities involved. In light of 50 years of regional collaboration and integration as the member states of ASEAN seek to chart out a future path for the region, this book is dedicated to showcasing different challenges to governance that occur due to internal and external pressures for the various member states. The editors are particularly interested in the multi-level governance challenges on issues of democracy, equity, and sustainability, the adaptation of policies and norms to fit an ASEAN way, and the changing roles of civil society and citizens in this process of seeking a common identity and voice. The book is divided into four sections. The first section introduces the fundamental political institutional dynamics that are in play within the region and the interplay between regional forces and national norms. The second section tackles the economic and legal discourses that various member states face in relation to external and internal pressures related to international and regional trade and industry. The third section focuses on issues of sustainability and equity resulting from the vast socio-spatial differences in the varied cities and regions of member states. In the final section, the authors discuss dilemmas resulting from economic growth in exploitative industries and the impact that has on the local and regional community through the lenses of inclusivity and justice. Written by a diverse collection of policy makers, researchers, educators and activists from the regions discussed, this book provides an authoritative first-hand analysis of key challenges to governance in Southeast Asia and ASEAN. As such, this volume is an excellent resource for academics, advanced masters and PhD candidates interested in the region, and major Southeast Asian research institutes and centers as well as policy makers and influencers at both national and regional levels within the region.

Abstract

"Alice Cavalieri has produced a careful and comprehensive analysis of public budgeting during the turbulent course of modern Italian history… It is bound to become a standard go-to resource for future studies of budgeting and policy processes more generally." —Bryan D. Jones, JJ “Jake” Pickle Regents Chair in Congressional Studies, University of Texas at Austin, USA "Alice Cavalieri’s volume is an original piece of empirical research and a great contribution to the understanding of recent political changes in Italy." —Luca Verzichelli, Professor of Political Science, University of Siena, Italy This book assesses Italian budgetary policy over the last thirty years. Covering more than three decades of political change and national transformation, it considers the institutional and external factors that have shaped long-term budgetary changes. The book analyses the levels of expenditure allocation across varying budget categories, and compares the budget bill and budget law in order to shed new light on the specific dynamics that have influenced budgetary decision-making processes. Overall, the book provides important conclusions on the role of the budget as a governmental policy instrument, the consequences of multilevel governance over national budgetary policy, and the impact of national and international crises on budgetary changes. With Italy being one of the most important parliamentary democracies in Europe and a key actor within the European Union, these conclusions have important repercussions for other European parliamentary democracies. The book will appeal to scholars and students of European public policy, public administration and economic governance. Alice Cavalieri is a Researcher at the University of Trieste, Italy. She is the Italian country lead for the Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT), and a member of the Comparative Agendas Project. Her research interests include budget politics and policy change in Italy and Europe.

Abstract

This book is an analysis and exploration of the relationship between peasants and policies within the process of reform in China. After examining the long term rural policies, either before or after the reform, it was found that all these polices have been expected to promote peasants’ interests and claimed to take enhancing peasants’ happiness as their goal. Nonetheless, the history and current reality of rural development have demonstrated that the same policy starting point had lead to very different policy designs. Even today, quite a few institutional arrangements with good intentions have ended up with opposite results and have even become bad policies that do harm to people. This book argues that the reason for such serious deviation, between political intentions and institutional arrangements, as well as between policy goals and its results is: as a political force, the peasantry itself has not effectively engaged with the political process of the country.  .

Abstract

This book constitutes a critical intervention in the theoretical discussion over the political relationship between democracy and communism. Shedding light on the philosophical origins of the Democracy-debate, it draws a clear demarcation line between liberalism and republicanism, arguing that after rejecting the former and supporting the latter, the young Marx endorsed “true democracy” as a prelude to his forthcoming theory of communism. To this end, while following the dynamics of the Marxian history of political ideas and pre-communist theory of the state, the book takes into account the thought of a vast range of philosophers and political theorists, starting from the Ancient times (Aristotle), passing through the Age of Enlightenment (Spinoza, Rousseau), the German Idealist tradition (Hegel) the Young Hegelians’ Republicanism (Bauer, Ruge, Feuerbach), and reaching our own times (Arendt, Colletti, MacPherson, Castoriadis, Poulantzas). It will be of interest to students and scholars interested in the history of political thought, theories of democracy, and Marxism. .
