In a world of open markets and global trade, development thinking seeks stability and prosperity for the world's poor by expanding access to financial products. This book challenges the development sector's embrace of 'financial inclusion' by exploring how the new risks and instabilities that accompany the pivot towards the global economy undermining the functioning of money itself. Cast against fundamental change in the monetary environment accompanying the globalisation of markets, the book examines the rapid liberalisation of money and markets in Pakistan. It argues that liberalisation has generated substantive problems not only for the central bank as guardian of national currency, but for ordinary households. By pinpointing how globalisation generates new risks for households in the everyday economy, the book reveals jarring contradictions between free markets and financial inclusion whilst challenging money theory by positing substantive and empirically-grounded monetary contestation that demonstrates a burden of risk imposed on ordinary people, that is only exacerbated by financial inclusion.

This book explores the political economy of China-Pakistan economic corridor, a major pilot project for China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiatives. Pakistan will provide China with not only a pathway access to the Indian Ocean, Middle East and Africa, but also vital connections to the Trans-Asia railway network that links Southeast Asia, South Asia and West Asia. This book analyzes how domestic factors in Pakistan will affect China’s $46 billion investments. It will be of interest to scholars, policymakers, and journalists. Bai Gao is Professor of Sociology at Duke University. His research areas include economic sociology, comparative-historical sociology, international political economy, and comparative political economy. Gao is the author of Economic Ideology and Japanese Industrial Policy: Developmentalism from 1931 to 1965, Japan’s Economic Dilemma: The Institutional Origins of Prosperity and Stagnation, and Western Social Sciences and Japanese Studies. He is also an editor for High-Speed Rail: An Analysis of the Chinese Innovation System, and China-Europe Freight Trains: State Building and Market Building. Zhihong Zhen is Professor of School of Sociology and Political Science in Shanghai University, Director of the Center for International Political Economy of Shanghai University, Director of the Institute of Gerontology of Shanghai University, and Secretary-General of Economics Sociology Committee of Chinese Sociology Association. His main research area include economic sociology, population aging, and international political economy.
