Abstract

What happens to European Union (EU) fiscal policy coordination in hard times? Recent accounts of the EU have portrayed the union as plagued by an austerity regime and rampant moral hazard. Charlotte Rommerskirchen provides an alternative account of economic cooperation in Europe during the Great Recession and the European Debt Crisis. Drawing on Mancur Olson's theory of collective action, this volume combines evidence from statistical analysis and extensive interviews with key players.

Abstract

This book explores the political and economic challenges faced by the Eurozone, focusing on the structural and governance issues surrounding the euro currency. The author, Bruno Colmant, delves into the political motivations behind the euro's creation, its role as a unifying force for Europe, and the lack of provisions for exiting the euro. The text highlights the shortcomings in economic policies and criteria for Eurozone membership, particularly before the 2007-2008 financial crisis. It also examines the measures taken during the Greek crisis and the ongoing need for stronger governance and convergence in the Eurozone. The book is intended for readers interested in European politics and economics, providing insights into the complexities of monetary union and the need for reform.

Abstract

This book traces the role of money in the creation of the state. From US independence to the establishment of the EU and the breakup of the USSR and beyond, Wilson examines changing attitudes about monetary sovereignty, arguing for a more rational attitude toward money as a means of transactions rather than as a symbol of national identity.

Abstract

"Since the outbreak of the 2008 financial crisis, European Union (EU) institutions and member states have engaged in a major effort to repair the architecture of economic governance of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). This book takes as its starting point the unclear notion of financial stability, which only recently has received a more detailed legal analysis. It examines the evolution of the concept of financial stability during the financial crisis and provides a conceptual framework in order to demonstrate that financial has become a foundational objective in Europe and has set a new normative framework in EU law and policy. Arguing that financial stability is a foundational objective in EU law and policy based on certain normative instruments, this ground-breaking book provides an in-depth and original understanding of the newly developed framework to attain supranational financial stability. In its analysis of the legal implications of these new instruments, the study examines topics and issues such as the following: the concept and normative instruments of financial stability at European level; the renewed economic governance in Europe; the financial assistance mechanisms developed in Europe; the new regulatory environment for banks at European level; the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the role of the European Central Bank (ECB) therein; and the new framework for banking resolution, with specific focus on the Single Resolution Mechanism. The author shows in detail how an appropriate level of supranational regulation, supervision, burden-sharing and rescue measures strengthen financial stability."--

Abstract

"In this book, a historical analysis of the precedents of the euro is examined within the context of the current issues affecting the Eurozone and the long-term effects of the institutional changes implemented since 2010. The book begins by placing the Eurozone challenges in the historical context of previous monetary unions, drawing on the experience of the gold standard. It then specifically focuses on the problems arising from the running of permanent trade imbalances within the Eurozone. The authors explore the advantages and disadvantages of being a member of the Eurozone and attempt to measure the optimality of a currency area by the calculation of an index on internal macroeconomic asymmetries. They address the proposals recently made in favour of a fiscal union in the Euro zone; including the economic and political feasibility of fiscal transfers in the Eurozone. The final two papers discuss whether the monetary union is in fact more than just that, and whether it will lead inevitably to some form of political union if it is to survive. With chapters by leading experts from both Europe and the UK, this book will appeal to students in Economics, Finance, Politics, EU integration and European studies; as well as academics and professional economists doing research in EU integration, the Euro zone, monetary history and monetary and banking unions in Europe, the UK and elsewhere"--

Abstract

"This book provides a commentary on the law of the EU related to the Monetary Union. It contains a comprehensive analysis of all provisions of the Statute of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the European Central Bank (ECB). In addition, the book also analyses all provisions of the Treaties themselves which regulate the ESCB and the ECB. This analysis is supplemented by commentaries on other Protocols which contain relevant rules for the Monetary Union. In essence, all relevant statutory rules governing the euro and its key monetary authority, the European Central Bank, are unfolded and explained in one volume. This gives the book a unique position in the legal literature on the law of the EU. With contributions by renowned academics and practitioners, this book is an expanded and updated translation of the 2013 German commentary, EWU Kommentar zu Europĩschen Wh̃rungsunion (Mohr Siebeck) and is an invaluable resource for practitioners and academics alike who are looking for a provision-by-provision commentary on the laws governing the European Monetary Union."--

Abstract

"After decades of economic integration and EU enlargement, the economic geography of Europe has shifted, with new peripheries emerging and the core showing signs of fragmentation. This book examines the paths of the core and peripheral countries, with a focus on their diverse productive capabilities and their interdependence. Crisis in the European Monetary Union: A Core-Periphery Perspective provides a new framework for analysing the economic crisis that has shaken the Eurozone countries. Its analysis goes beyond the short-term, to study the medium and long-term relations between 'core' countries (particularly Germany) and Southern European 'peripheral' countries. The authors argue that long-term sustainability means assigning the state a key role in guiding investment, which in turn implies industrial policies geared towards diversifying, innovating and strengthening the economic structures of peripheral countries to help them thrive.Offering a fresh angle on the European crisis, this volume will appeal to students, academics and policymakers interested in the past, present and future construction of Europe."--Provided by publisher.
