This book highlights fundamental, but often neglected, issues important for a better understanding of present-day Iran. It underlines the idea that the most effective means for a nation to meet challenges and practices of the modern era lies with the fundamental values and norms that resonate with its inhabitants. This book is meant to be a companion to the author’s published book Iran Revisited: Exploring the Historical Roots of Culture, Economics, and Society that expands upon that book’s ideas, without repeating its theoretical reasoning. Its goal is to offer a better understanding of the current and evolving situations in Iran. In this regard, the author tried to clarify his position through a host of suggestions, most notably, the need to consider social rights as the bare minimum but extremely imperative criteria in our contemporary discourse for the betterment of our society. These rights, he argues, are the most fundamental tenets of any community that strives to succeed and flourish. In this context, the underlying discussion rests on the following claim: the most persisting problems in Iran are the outcomes of the gradual regression of the people’ mindset that persistently overlooked their heritage and value system in favor of imitating ideas that were/are neither compatible with their culture and history, nor applicable to the country’s socioeconomic conditions. The author, therefore, presumed that these predicaments are self-inflicted: they were neither caused by a specific state, nor belong to a historical period, or individual(s); they cannot be characterized by political or economic terminologies, but are firmly rooted in people inability to recognize that the most vital principle in developing and propelling a nation forward is the existence of a unified people. .

This book analyses and assesses the Agadir Agreement’s impact on economic integration, its effect on political cooperation, and its role in promoting peace between participating countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Since the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011, the geo-political situation in MENA has further drifted towards instability and uncertainty. Expert analysis of the region seems to lurch from one crisis to another without moving beyond a focus on conflict. Few scholars have recognised that the MENA governments have long regarded regional economic integration as a chief policy objective to facilitate intra-regional trade and promote political cooperation and peace. Realising the shortcomings of the various integrative processes, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan signed the Agadir Agreement in 2004. To this date, it stands as one of the most significant economic agreements in the MENA region. Taking into account this variety of factors, this book offers a new assessment of the pull between unity and disunity in the Middle East and North Africa region. Dr Tarik Oumazzane is Lecturer in Middle East / North Africa Studies in the Department of History at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. He has taught and convened several modules including: ‘International History of the Middle East and North Africa’; ‘War and Peace in the Post-Arab Spring’; ‘Political Economy of Under Development’, ‘International Relations and Global History’ and ‘Liberating Africa: Decolonisation, Development and the Cold War’.

“This is a significant contribution to our understanding of issues campaigning and lobbying in our evermore complex and global world of 8 billion people. This is a book that gives a critical understanding of how nation brands, international policies and issue group campaigns are branded and developed. Funding, pressure group activity and the complexity of global issue campaigning and lobbying are explored alongside Israel and Palestine within the context of Australia and New Zealand.” - Phil Harris, Professor, University of Chester, UK This book looks at how both advocacy groups in New Zealand and Australia use political marketing to conduct advocacy and support Israeli and Palestinian public diplomacy and nation branding. The focus lies on their marketing orientation, segmentation/targeting/ positioning (STP), and internal marketing practices. The theoretical framework will draw upon several political marketing frameworks and concepts including the product/sales/market-oriented framework, the STP process, and Petitt's internal stakeholder marketing approaches. The book examines four case studies: (1) the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA), (2) the Israel Institute of New Zealand (IINZ), (3) the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC), and (4) the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN). To ensure balance and comparison, four groups representing both the pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian camps in NZ and Australia were selected. Other criteria included their broad scope of activity, approachability/accessibility, and connections to state actors through advocacy, public diplomacy, and nation branding. Andrew Lim is a researcher based in New Zealand who is particularly interested in how advocacy groups can contribute to public diplomacy. He is also interested in New Zealand politics, history, and social issues.

MOHAMED A. RAMADY SAUDI ARAMCO 2030: POST IPO CHALLENGES The decision by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to launch the country’s ambitious and generational transformation program to wean the Kingdom away from oil under the Vision 2030 plan in 2016 was also an important milestone for Saudi Aramco. The Vision places an important role for the National Oil Company to play and enshrines some key objectives for the company: · Transforming Aramco from an oil company to a global industrial conglomerate, · Using the proceeds of the IPO to transform the Public Investment Fund into the world’s largest Sovereign Wealth Fund, · Involving Aramco in a wide range of industrial enterprises and partnerships with a focus on localized local content, · Aramco to become a catalyst for transparency and investor accountability The Author examines Aramco from its infancy in the 1930’s under the concession agreement, to where it is today in preparing for its new Vision 2030 expanded mandate and the planned IPO. Topics discussed include a comparative analysis of the fortunes of four partly privatized National Oil Companies – Statoil, Rosneft , Petrobras and Sinopec - and lessons learned from their experience ; Aramco’s pivotal shift towards the Asian and Far East markets and its diversification into the refining and petrochemical sector; Saudi Arabia’s energy efficiency and renewable energy program; Aramco’s current structure and its key asset, its people ; required governance and other reforms to meet different international listing requirements , with their listing criteria examined in detail . Finally the Author estimates Aramco’s IPO valuation under different oil prices and key assumptions and scenarios , as well as Saudi Arabia’s future role in OPEC and its oil policy. The Crown Prince has placed high expectations on a successful Aramco IPO as the fate of the Vision 2030 and the company is entwined. Getting it wrong is not an option for both. Mohamed Ramady is a former Visiting Associate Professor of Finance and Economics at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He has written on OPEC and energy, the Saudi economy and GCC country risk analysis. He has also held senior positions with international financial institutions in the Arabian Gulf and Europe.

In this book historians and social scientists examine boycotts from the eighteenth century to the present day. Employed in struggles against British rule in the American colonies, against racial discrimination in the United States during the Civil Rights movement, and Apartheid in South Africa, today it is Israel that is the focus of a campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS). Boycotts have featured in campaigns undertaken by labour, consumer and nationalist movements. Jews were the target of boycotts advanced by various national movements in Central and Eastern Europe and the anti-Jewish boycotts instigated by the Nazis. In this collection, contributors explore the history of past boycott movements and examine the different narratives put forward by proponents and opponents of the current BDS movement directed against Israel: one which places the movement within a history of struggles for ‘human rights’; the other which regards BDS as the latest manifestation of an antisemitic tradition. .

The book is the first to cover all areas of privatization in Israel and one of the first to do so in general, including state infrastructure, immigration policy, land, health, education, welfare, regulation, and policy design. As such, it offers a comprehensive volume for students, policy makers, and scholars interested in the economic, sociological, political, and legal perspectives of a major policy trend that has changed the face and character of the modern state. In addition, it is a vital contribution to those who have an interest in changes in Israeli society, politics, and economy.

This book uses electricity-sector reforms to question some of the preconceived ideas concerning the MENA region and to provide a broader analysis of related political economy issues. It presents potential further developments of MENA’s electricity-sector reforms, taking into consideration the region’s unique constraints and opportunities, and discusses the practical limits of reform and deregulation. Specifically, it examines the relationship between reforms and oil prices from a new perspective and presents alternatives to the Single Buyer Model. Complementing existing research on electricity-sector reforms in other emerging markets, the book provides a new analytical framework for assessing reforms that can be easily applied to other markets and sectors.

This book reveals aspects of the rise and fall of the European and Iranian Left, their conceptualization of Marxism and ideological formations. Questions regarding the Left and Marxism within two seemingly different economic, political and intellectual and cultural contexts require comprehensive comparative histories of the two settings. This project investigates the intellectual transformations, which the European and Iranian Left have experienced after the Russian Revolution to the present. It examines the impacts of these transformations on their conceptualizations of history and revolution, domination and ideology, emancipation and universality, democracy and equality. The monograph will appeal to researchers, scholars and graduate students in the fields of political science, Middle Eastern and European studies, political history and comparative politics. Yadullah Shahibzadeh is Author of The Iranian Political Language: From the late Nineteenth Century to the Present (2015), and Islamism and Post-Islamism in Iran: An Intellectual History (2016). Previously, he taught at the University of Oslo, Norway.

This book provides new insights and research studies on how developing countries come to terms with the nationalisation policies of Gulf economies that provide employment for their nationals. Focusing on regions and countries that have traditionally been overlooked, it includes studies on labour migration from Egypt to the Middle East and from the Philippines to Lebanon, migrant experiences and policy prospects in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, and Indian migration to the Gulf. The book fills a critical gap in migration research by studying migration from various Indian states, such as Tamil Nadu, Telugu-speaking states (Telangana and Andhra Pradesh), Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It also explores the unexpected phenomenon of demographic windows of economic opportunity (not documented in demographic literature) observed in a few Arab countries due to older migrant expatriates returning to their home country; the impact of international out-migration on intergenerational educational mobility among children in migrant-sending households in Kerala; and forced migration of Kerala Muslims to the Gulf.
