"The present macroeconomic crisis has demonstrated that a deeper understanding of the importance of relevant macroeconomic theories and methods is wanting. Additionally, lack of methodological awareness is behind much of the disagreement within macroeconomics which, looked upon from outside, often appears incomprehensible. The Handbook will give a structured presentation of the study of principles and procedures by which macroeconomics is researched, taught and communicated both within academia and to a wider audience, and why specific theories, research strategies and teaching are preferred. The principles of selecting theory relevant to real-world problems are the core of methodology. This book will contain a broad range of arguments behind theory construction and appraisal and the consequences of these choices within the field of macroeconomics. An international range of experts provide clear analysis of key concepts, ideas and principles to give academics, students and others a better understanding of the macroeconomics behind policy conclusions which are put forward at different levels"--

"This book provides a comprehensive account of the challenges encountered in empirical economics. It explains approaches used implicitly by researchers and shows where they are adequate and where they break down. It investigates why, in the field of economics, we make so little visible progress when compared to fields with a strong practical component like the computer sciences. The author asserts that the main impediment to progress in economics is "false feedback", which is defined as a false result in an empirical study, such as empirical evidence produced by a statistical model that violates some of its assumptions. Because false feedback is hard to recognize, economists have difficulty knowing where they stand in their inquiries and regularly leads them to the wrong conclusions. The book searches for the reasons behind the emergence of such false feedback. It thereby contributes to a wider discussion in the field of metascience about the actual practices of researchers. The book thus offers a case study of metascience for the field of empirical economics. The main strengths of the book are the numerous smaller insights it provides throughout. It delves into deep discussions of various theoretical aspects, which it illustrates by many applied examples and a wide array of references, especially to philosophy. The book clarifies complicated and often abstract subjects, particularly when it comes to controversial topics such as data mining. Readers will gain an understanding of the main challenges present in empirical economic research, as well as, the possible solutions"--

"This book sets out to provide postgraduate researchers with guidance on selecting and applying socio-technical theories to the study of information systems, including how they can be combined to complement each other. Until now it has been difficult to source advice on the application of these theories, and there has been no single book that combines multiple theories as this does. Examining the impacts of technological developments and seeking to understand how humans interact with computers and systems is a dynamic field but can often confuse researchers with the overwhelming number of social theories that are utilised to derive insights. Instead, the author in this book breaks down some of the most popular theories used to underpin information system research, such as activity theory (AT), actor-network theory (ANT), contingency theory (CT), diffusion of innovation (DOI), structuration theory (ST), and the technology acceptance model (TAM). By doing so, this book serves to enable a simpler, faster selection of appropriate theories, and a more effective and productive application that leads to richer, more rigorous research outcomes. Written for postgraduates, researchers and academics in the fields of information technology and information systems, this book provides a valuable resource of socio-technical research methodologies that will enable and enhance future studies"--

"This edited volume provides an in-depth exploration into the influential work of Wade Hands, examining the changing relationship between methodology and the history of economics in connection with contemporary developments in economics. The papers in this volume fall into four parts, each devoted to an important theme in Wade Hands' work. The first section explores the influence and scope of Reflection Without Rules, capturing the rich debate that the book generated about what guides methodological and philosophical thinking in economics. The second section examines Hands' research on Paul Samuelson's economics and the methodological dimensions of Samuelson's thinking. Section three looks to Hands' long-standing interest in the philosophical foundations of pragmatist thinking. The final section addresses his more recent research in the methodological import of the emergence of behavioural economics. Together, the contributors show how Hands' insights in complexity theory, identity, and stratification are key to understanding a reconfigured economic methodology. They also reveal how his willingness to draw from multiple academic disciplines gives us a platform for interrogating mainstream economics and provides the basis for a humane yet scientific alternative. This unique volume will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers across social economics, history of economic thought, economic methodology, political economy and philosophy of social science"--
