“Professor Ahn’s most recent volume, Power Struggles: Energy security and energy diplomacy in the Asia Pacific, a deeply researched and timely consideration of the full range of energy security topics in Asia, serves the critical purposes of providing in-depth detail about the energy needs of Asia while also providing incisive analysis about what the international energy security environment will bear. Professor Ahn judges that a US-ROK Alliance committed to effective energy security will make a huge difference. A must-read for specialists but accessible for generalists, Power Struggles is the right book for these confounding times.” —Roy D. Kamphausen, President, The National Bureau of Asian Research (USA) “This wide-ranging book is a must-read for any student of energy security in Northeast Asia. This book purports to investigate and compare the economic development experiences in both Taiwan and South Korea in last two decades. Taiwan and South Korea’s economic development after WWII is a well-known story. However, their development after the successful post-war industrialization has not been comprehensively studied. The book examines whether the three factors —the role of private business, government policy, and foreign influence—that had contributed to Taiwan’s and Korea’s post-war development, are still relevant during the post-industrial development era. Researchers in the fields of global political economy, Asian economic development and East Asian studies will find this book a fresh and invaluable contribution to the literature. The book will also be of value to policy makers in developing countries in drafting their national development policies, diplomats conducting economic diplomacy with Taiwan and South Korea, and business people planning to expand their business interests in Asia. Min-Hua Chiang is research fellow at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore. She obtained her PhD in Economics from Université Pierre Mendès-France, now part of Université Grenoble Alpes in 2008. Her research interests include Asia-Pacific regionalism, trade and investment, and issues related to economic growth and development in East Asia.

This book explores the emerging EU-China relationship with a focus on the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative. It takes a narrative approach to understanding the EU-China relationship as a means to highlight how scholars in the EU and China interpret the narrativization of EU-China bilateral relations and to how this bilateral relationship is refracted through relations with third parties. The volume brings together scholars from China and Europe in the fields of Chinese foreign policy, EU studies, and strategic communication. The empirical focus cuts across policy, publics and media, and across history, political economy and diplomacy. The Belt and Road Initiative, alongside the other policy areas addressed in the chapters, offers ways for people in Europe and China to get to know one another in new ways, and for the EU and its member states and the Chinese state to forge new partnerships.

China's Social Credit System has fundamentally re-shaped of surveillance worldwide, with discussions of it making it into hundreds of media headlines and all the way into European Union legislation and the United Nations. Social Credit offers one of the first comprehensive assessments of this infamous system. It is aimed at the many experts and professionals -- both scholarly and more broadly -- that have to deal with its fallout on a regular basis. In a concise format, it covers the questions that have garnered the most attention worldwide: from social credit scoring and blacklists to its history and theoretical foundation. Throughout, its core thesis is that more often than not, even China's government is at a loss what to do with this messy and complex initiative. This has caused fragmented and low-tech implementation, but where insufficient legal safeguards can have far-reaching implications for the normal market order and for human rights. Vincent Brussee is an Analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies, Europe's largest think tank and research institute on contemporary China. He is the institute's lead researcher on the Social Credit System. In addition to publishing extensively for MERICS, his work has been featured in Foreign Policy, the Diplomat, and various national outlets in Europe. He holds a graduate degree with the highest distinction in Asian Studies from Leiden University (the Netherlands), focusing on China's domestic governance.

Over the past 60 years high-income countries have invested over 4000 billion euros in development aid. With varying degrees of success, these investments in low-income countries contributed to tackling structural problems such as access to water, health care, and education. Today, however, international development cooperation is no longer restricted to helping by giving. Instead, it is rather about opportunities, mutual interests, risk taking, and an inclusive societal approach. With the arrival of major new actors such as China, India, and Brazil, and the manifestation of private companies and foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, development aid is being eclipsed by new forms of international cooperation, increasingly accompanied by investments, trade, and give-and-take exchanges.0The agenda for sustainable development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 and to be realised by 2030, is a case in point of new influential frameworks that usher in a global rather than a traditional North-South perspective.0This book reviews 60 years of international development aid and its relevant actors, outlining today?s challenges and opportunities. Richly illustrated with case studies and examples, 'International Development Cooperation Today' maps successes and failures and synthesizes visions and discussions from all over the world. By pointing out the radical shift from the traditional North-South perspective to a global paradigm, this book is essential reading for all practitioners, academics, and donors involved in development aid.
