The water policy issues are well- documented in a large set of reports and studies, completed over time showing that the policy prescription and its implementation has been weak in the past as this book reveals. The key reforms initiated were lost due to a lack of government’s will and commitment and more so by pervasive political economy of water. Given this background, each chapter in the book follows a balanced approach in seeking and evaluating alternate solutions to water management issues, especially improvements in water governance and tackling new challenges emerging from the climate change in the short and long term. This approach underpins the importance of moving from the culture of piloting projects to actual implementation on an impact-oriented scale. The book would also highlight that most of the water solutions lie outside the water sector such as agriculture, population, economy, etc. Post COVID-19 policies are exploring new food-health nexus that calls for nature based solutions for our future agriculture growth. The book would show case pioneer work underway in Pakistan on how new policy discourse can reduce water use in agriculture without investing in expensive water technology and infrastructure, thus saving enough water for other competing purposes. .

This book covers several innovative alternative livelihoods based on mangrove floral resources with their respective SWOT analysis. True mangrove flora and their associates in Indian Sundarbans are noted for their wide spectrum of ecosystem services in which livelihoods of the region are one of the most important components. Many alternative mangrove-centric livelihoods are in the pipeline of startup. However, due to difficulty in marketing and lack of clarity over ownership of natural resources, the values of the mangrove-based products have not been fully realized. Natural resources of several categories in Indian Sundarbans like oysters, seaweeds, medicinal mangrove flora, vitamin-rich mangrove fruits, etc. are still lying untapped. These untapped resources have been spun with the livelihood sectors of the Sundarban people backed up with sound business models to make the venture sustainable. The carbon foot prints associated with each of these livelihoods have been studied in details and steps have been suggested for net zero carbon livelihood programmes along with their sustainability. The book provides the readers about several mangrove-based cutting-edge researches and technologies in the domain of climate resilient livelihood, which if implemented can lead to food and economic security of the region.

Echoing the famous "The Limits to Growth" report from 1972, this edited volume analyses the changes that the World System has undergone to the present, on the fiftieth anniversary of the original report. During the past fifty years, both the concept and understanding of these limits have significantly changed. This book highlights that the evolution of the World System has approached a new critical milestone, moving into a fundamentally new phase of historical development, when the old economic and social technologies no longer work as efficiently as before or even begin to function counterproductively, which leads the World System into a systemic crisis. The book discusses the transition of human society to a new phase state, the shape of which has not yet been determined. New approaches are needed for both, for the analysis of the global situation, and for forecasts. The book is based on an integrated approach including the world-systems, historical and evolutionary perspectives, as well as a systematic view of society, in which changes in one subsystem cause transformations in others. Through mathematical modeling, it defines the main vectors of transformations of the World System; makes a detailed forecast of the development of all the main subsystems of the society and the World System, while presenting horizons of changes from short-term to ultra-long-term; and presents different development scenarios as well as recommendations on how to achieve a transition to the most favorable scenario. The book will appeal to members and followers of the Club of Rome, policy-makers, as well as to scholars from various disciplines interested in a better understanding of the World System evolution, global futures, development studies, climate change, and future societies. .

This book highlights China’s theoretical advances and practical actions toward climate risk prevention in 2019. It provides both an overview and detailed discussion of specific topics, including case studies. The general report assesses the latest changes in the climate system both globally and in China, and identifies areas most susceptible to the impact of climate change. This is followed by topical reports on issues such as global climate governance, China’s strategy in climate negotiations, the carbon trade, climate insurance, domestic actions to address climate concerns, including specific solutions to local challenges and achievements made by cities in China. Written by top experts in the field from Research Institute for Eco-civilization of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and National Climate Center of China Meteorological Administration, the book aims to inform the readers on recent development and progress in climate risk prevention.

"Colonial Cataclysms: Climate, Landscape and Memory in Mexico's Little Ice Age is an in-depth examination of the climatic effects of the hemispheric "Little Ice Age" on pluviosity, soils, and indigenous agriculture in central Mexico during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The manuscript offers a corrective of the long-standing scholarly thought that the primary problem facing agriculture in this period was drought. In contrast, Skopyk argues that the problem was in fact elevated rainfall that resulted in flooding and the silting of wetlands, particularly in the watersheds of Tlaxcala. Such elevated rainfall restricted agriculture and led to conditions that were described as "arid" or "desiccated." Such over-saturation of rainfall led to destructive bursts of dirt and water to downstream communities, drastically eroding and degrading soil. At the time, major hydraulic engineering projects were launched, rivers were deemed the "enemy" of the people, and human ingenuity was seen as the only remedy to a capricious and impetuous nature. Historians and thinkers have long considered the region's abundant flooding to be the product of failed hydraulic infrastructure. Skopyk argues that anomalies in the region's temperature have been neglected, converting what he sees as Mexico's "Little Ice Age" into Mexico's "Little Drought Age.""--
