Tijdens de bestudeerde periode 1958-1980 raakte de modernisering van de maatschappij in een stroomversnelling. Technische en culturele vernieuwingen, veranderende gezins- en genderopvattingen, het verdwijnen van traditionele gebruiken, het verschuiven van standgebonden verschillen, het oprukken van een consumptiecultuur en de democratisering van de welvaart, confronteerden grote lagen van de bevolking met de vraag “hoe willen we wonen”. Wonen bleek geen evidentie meer. Diverse organisaties stonden hun bewoners bij in het inrichten van een huis en het creëren van een thuis. Voorliggend onderzoek toont hoe de modernisering vorm kreeg in het huis van diverse bewonersgroepen. Aan de hand van een onderzoeksschema voor een afgebakend onderhandelingsveld, wordt gefocust op een aantal interacties tussen de woonopvattingen van architecten, de overheid, enkele belangrijke middenveldorganisaties en de woonpraktijken, woonbehoeften en woonverlangens van diverse lagen van de bevolking. Welke verticale interacties vonden plaats tussen de vermeende “top” (overheid, architecten en andere deskundigen) en de zogenoemde “basis” (de bewoners)? Was het wonen een top down proces? Kwam het initiatief veeleer van onderuit (bottom-up)? Of was het middenveld een belangrijke speler? Vonden er ook horizontale interactiepatronen plaats tussen de actoren van het schema? Kortom, beïnvloedden de woonpraktijken van bepaalde groepen deze van andere groepen? Aan de hand van publicaties van de actoren en 57 retrospectieve interviews en woningbezoeken, worden deze vragen beantwoord. Tijdens een ‘bezoek’ door delen van het huis wordt duidelijk hoe de modernisering er vorm kreeg. We vangen aan bij de door het middenveld drukst besproken ruimte, de keuken, en eindigen bij een nieuwe ruimte die het middenveld haast volledig over het hoofd zag, de garage. Het middenveld vormt de kapstok van het werk, het veldwerk de aanvulling. Bijkomend worden twee specifieke woningen bezocht. In de eerste excursie wordt ingezoomd op een woning die veeleer atypisch was voor de Belgische woningbouwproductie, maar wel als model naar voren werd geschoven door een middenveldorganisatie. In de tweede excursie wordt een populair woonbeeld belicht dat vanaf het einde van de jaren 1960 op grote schaal opdook: de fermette. Wat waren de verschillen tussen een model dat van bovenaf werd gepromoot (topdown) en een model dat veeleer van onderuit opdook (bottom-up)? En wat betekende dit voor het afgebakende onderhandelingsveld? During the 1960s and 1970s the modernisation of the society in Flanders gained momentum. Technical and cultural renewal, changing ideas about gender and family life, the loss of traditions, the blurring of the classes, the emergence of a consumption culture and the democratisation of the welfare, made the question “How would we like to live” for many people very real. Dwelling and living didn’t seem to be so straightforward anymore. Several organisations guided the public in how to build a house and how to create a home. This research shows – by means of a ‘visit’ - how domesticity and modernisation took shape in the home of diverse groups of inhabitants. Dwelling is regarded as the result of a long process of interactions among government bodies, architects, socio-cultural movements, popular discourses, economic developments, technical possibilities and individual households. A ‘vertical’ dimension is discerned in this process, consisting of an interplay between, on the one hand, government institutions and social organizations, and, on the other hand, home occupants (whether or not as members of such organizations). A ‘horizontal’ interplay between various sub-groups in society is distinguished as well. All these groups have a view of living – colored by their own standards and values – that either dismisses or takes account of the practice of living of other groups. On the basis of written sources of the actors as well ass fieldwork (visits to homes, 57 retrospective interviews and spatial analysis of residential building), this research tries to formulate an answer on the following questions. Was living a top down process or rather a bottom-up process? Or were the horizontal interplays the most important ones? And how did the intermediary organisations functioned in this field of tensions? This PhD opens with the most discussed room of the home, the kitchen, and concludes with the room that all organisations practically ignored, the garage. In addition, two specific home models are studied: a model put forward by an organisation and a more popular model that near the end of the 1960s emerged in large numbers throughout Flanders. What are the differences between these two models? And what can they tell us about the impact of the intermediary organisations?

In 1977 the Benedictine monk and architect Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) publishes his book De Architectonische Ruimte. Vijftien Lessen over de Dispositie van het Menselijk Verblijf [Architectonic Space, fifteen lessons on the disposition of the human habitat]. It is an amplification of his first book Le nombre plastique. Quinze leçons sur lordonnance architectonique [Het plastische getal. Fifteen lessons on architectonic ordinance], an architectural theory and design manual published in 1960. As the introduction of Le nombre plastique explains, Van der Laan aims to restore, in all its objectivity, the fundamental and intrinsic architectural laws. The design methodology that he presents in order to achieve these laws in the building practice is based on the discernment, the human ability to differentiate sizes. It evolves around the concept of the margin, the boundary of the differences that only just can be perceived as a building stone for architecture. Besides this theory, Dom van der Laan develops a personal architectural style, which can best be described as elementary architecture. He regards his own realizations as specimen of his architectural theory and although his production is rather limited, only four convents and a house, it formulates a tangible and concrete background for his architectural doctrine.This research provides an in-depth understanding of Van der Laans architectural theory and its practical application, through a contextual and historical approach. It is conducted on two different levels, resulting in two interwoven, dialectic parts. The first approach focuses on the genealogy and evolution, as well as the historiography, of the work of Dom Hans van der Laan. What are his motivations? What is the context in which the work can be situated? What are the relevant influences that shaped Van der Laans own thoughts? Why this central focus on the proportional system of the 'plastic number' and how is this more than a mere formal aesthetics? Through the analysis of drawings, unpublished source material and his personal correspondence, the intrinsic relation between Van der Laans motivations and main sources, his teaching and realizations is mapped out. It shows how the hierarchical deep-level structure that Van der Laan is searching for, grows from his Benedictine and architectural background.The second approach focuses on the actual practical application of the plastic number in Van der Laans work. How does his design methodology feed into his design practice? What is the ground for his elementary architecture? Interwoven with the historical reconstruction of the first approach, this part is conceived as an annotated catalogue. As a red thread on Dom van der Laans design methodology and its application, it historically maps all of his design sketches, analytical diagrams, abstract models and realized projects. As such, it gives a clear account on the evolution of Van der Laans design methodology and how it actually works. It shows how his abstract archetypal models evolve into patterns and formulas that feed into his own elementary architecture. It explains Van der Laans main concepts of 'the margin', 'the plastic number' and of 'architectonic space', which intertwines 'mutual nearness' and 'dynamic superposition'.
