"Je ne sais s'il sera canonisé", disait du père Lebbe le chanoine Leclercq, "mais pour avoir étudié les saints toute ma vie je sais qu'il est du bois dont on les fait". Le père Vincent Lebbe mourut en Chine en juin 1940 après être sorti épuisé des prisons communistes chinoises. C'est le généralissime Tchang-Kaï-chek lui-même qui l'avait fait libérer. C'était le temps où les communistes et les nationalistes s'unirent provisoirement contre l'envahisseur japonais. Né de père belge et de mère anglaise, en 1878, Vincent Lebbe est formé par les lazaristes français. C'est en missionnaire lazariste qu'il arrive en Chine en 1901. Toute sa vie est dès lors chinoise : langue, habit, nourriture, chant liturgique. Il prend la nationalité chinoise. Il écrit : "La Chine est le pays de l'avenir aux possibilités illimitées. Si comme c'est probable elle résiste à la crise actuelle et lui survit elle est appelée à jouer dans le monde un rôle inattendu ; et les destinées de la Sainte Eglise sur terre, à prendre les choses humainement, sont intimement liées à la question de son évangélisation qu'il ne faut pas retarder". Le père Lebbe, apôtre historique des Chinois, entame son apostolat en Chine en pleine révolte des Boxers. Il souffre du dépeçage de la Chine en "concessions" occidentales. Il veut passionnément une Eglise chinoise, des églises chinoises, des évêques chinois. En collaboration étroite avec le pouvoir colonial français, ses supérieurs français le renvoient en Europe. Mais l'exil lui est profitable. Le Pape prend fait et cause. Lebbe gagne. Il avait choisi en chinois le nom de Lei Ming Yuan, le tonnerre qui chante au loin. Disciple du plus grand missionnaire catholique de tous les temps, Paul de Tarse, il s'était tant fait chinois avec les Chinois que son visage était devenu celui d'un mandarin brûlant d'amour.
