Abstract

Particle Toxicology integrates the current knowledge in particulate physico-chemistry, cell/molecular biology and toxicology into a single volume. While using the classical toxicology paradigm of exposure - dose - response, it provides reviews on the mechanisms and properties of pathogenic particles and their pathogenic effects. The text describes how these actions may be related to specific site of deposition, translocation, particle composition, shape and the outcome of various pathogenic processes involving pro-inflammatory effects and inflammatory signaling, oxidative and nitrosative stress, particulate interactions in the pulmonary, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems, as well as genotoxic effects of ultrafine and other particles.

Abstract

Surface contamination is of cardinal importance in a host of technologies and industries, ranging from microelectronics to optics to automotive to biomedical. Thus, the need to understand the causes of surface contamination and their removal is very patent. Generally speaking, there are two broad categories of surface contaminants: film-type and particulates. In the world of shrinking dimensions, such as the ever-decreasing size of microelectronic devices, there is an intensified need to understand the behavior of nanoscale particles and to devise ways to remove them to an acceptable level.
