In dit boek vertellen we het verhaal achter twintig van dit soort vragen. Dit is uitdrukkelijk géén wiskundeboek, maar een boek over de rol die wiskunde speelt bij het bedenken van de creatieve oplossingen die de wereld nodig heeft. De vragen zijn opgedeeld in drie categorieën: huis-, tuin- en keukenwiskunde, wiskunde voor de werkvloer, en wiskunde voor de maatschappij van morgen. De thema's illustreren niet alleen de ongelooflijk brede inzetbaarheid van wiskunde in de wereld rondom ons, maar ook de grote diversiteit aan bruikbare wiskundige technieken. Zoals we net iets langer blijven kijken dan strikt noodzakelijk is wanneer we iemand zien passeren met een hoge X-factor, willen we hier de X-factor van de wiskunde in de verf zetten. Wanneer we iets langer kijken dan nodig naar wat we zien rondom ons, komt als vanzelf het besef dat er heel wat wiskunde gebruikt is om de mens te brengen tot waar hij vandaag staat. En dat er nog heel wat problemen over zijn, en te ontdekken, en wiskunde om die op te lossen.
