This book provides an overview of recent trends in the management of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders that may ensue from distressing experiences associated with the process of migration. Although the symptoms induced by trauma are common to all cultures, their specific meaning and the strategies used to deal with them may be culture-specific. Consequently, cultural factors can play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with psychological reactions to extreme stress. This role is examined in detail, with an emphasis on the need for therapists to bear in mind that different cultures often have different concepts of health and disease and that cross-cultural communication, assisted by a professionally trained and certified interpreter if necessary, is therefore essential in ensuring effective care of immigrant patients. The therapist’s own intercultural skills are highlighted as being an important factor in the success of any treatment, and specific care contexts and the global perspective are also discussed.

Culturele diversiteit is een deel van het dagelijks leven geworden. Dat heeft zijn weerslag gehad op de psychologie. Mensen uit andere landen denken, voelen en handelen anders dan wij hier gewend zijn. Ook landgenoten uit een andere streek of een andere sociale klasse gedragen zich vaak anders dan wij. In de open samenleving van vandaag komt iedereen veel vaker met deze andersdenkenden in aanraking dan vroeger. Voor die anderen zijn wij de andersdenkenden. Wat is ons scheidt is de 'cultuur' waarin we zijn opgegroeid, de met de paplepel ingegoten en daardoor vaak onbewuste waarden die maken dat wij 'normaal' vinden wat anderen als abnormaal beschouwen, goed wat anderen slecht vinden, en vies wat voor anderen schoon is. Allemaal andersdenkenden laat zien wat deze verschillen betekenen voor onze persoonlijkheid, onze gezondheid, ons gezinsleven, ons onderwijs, ons werk, onze overheid en voor de dingen waar we in geloven. Het gaat dieper in op de verschillende manieren waarop organisaties functioneren, zowel van land tot land als binnen één en hetzelfde land, en op wat er gebeurt als verschillende culturen elkaar ontmoeten. De eerste uitgave van dit boek verscheen sinds 1991 in zeventien talen, en beleefde in Nederland zeventien drukken. Inmiddels heeft de wereld niet stil gestaan. Geert en Gert Jan Hofstede hebben het boek daarom volledig herschreven op grond van ontwikkelingen in de wereld en in hun inzichten over culturen.
