This catalogue is a reference to the first time Vo came to Mexico, when he travelled with a long-time friend, a retired US military analyst who had lived in Vietnam. This relationship allowed Danh Vo to make a mediated approach to explore his country of birth and to appropriate thereby a series of historical moments and everyday situations that he had not experienced firsthand. But 'Wad al-hayara' is not just a personal reference, but also signifies a new chapter in Vo's work in that it examines the history of colonialism and its close ties to the dissemination of cultures and the assimilation of religions, going back in this case to the first Arab conquest of Spain and its later transposition to the "New World". It also refers to how the rise and fall of empires have a powerful impact on the social body and determine the cultural economies that make up our everyday lives.

The artist's house is a prism through which to view not only the artistic practice of its inhabitant, but also to apprehend broader developments in sculpture and contemporary art in relation to domestic architecture and interior space. Based on a series of interviews and site visits with living artists about the role of their home in relation to their work, Kirsty Bell looks at the house as receptacle, vehicle, model, theater, or dream space. In-depth analyses of these contemporary examples—including Jorge Pardo, Mirosław Bałka, Danh Vo, Gregor Schneider, Frances Stark, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Paweł Althamer, Mark Leckey, Monika Sosnowska, Gabriel Orozco, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Andrea Zittel—are contextualized by key artists of the twentieth century such as Kurt Schwitters, Alice Neel, Edward Krasiński, Carlo Mollino, and Louise Bourgeois. A two-way flow from the domestic arena to the exhibition space becomes apparent, in which the everyday has a significant role to play in the merging of such developments as installation art, relational aesthetics, expanded collage, and performance art.

"The movement of global populations, and subsequently the task of translation, underlies contemporary culture: the intricacies of ancient and modern Jewish diaspora, generations of colonisation and the transportation of slaves are now superimposed by economic and environmental migration, forced political exiles and refugees. This timely anthology will consider translation's ongoing role in cultural navigation, empathy and understanding disparate experience, exploring the approaches of artists, poets and theorists in negotiating increasingly protean identities: from the intrinsic intimacy of language, to translation's embedded structures of knowledge production and interaction, to its limitations of expression and, ultimately, its importance in a world of multiple perspectives. Artists surveyed include Meric Algün Ringborg, Geta Brătescu, Tanya Bruguera, Jesse Darling, Chto Delat, Chohreh Feyzdjou, Susan Hiller, Glenn Ligon, Teresa Margolles, Shirin Neshat, Hélio Oiticica, Pratchaya Phinthong, Kurt Schwitters, Yinka Shonibare, Mladen Stilinović, Erika Tan, Kara Walker, Wu Tsang. Writers include Hannah Arendt, James Baldwin, Walter Benjamin, Judith Butler, Luis Camnitzer, Jean Fisher, Stuart Hall, bell hooks, Sarat Maharaj, Martha Rosler, Bertrand Russell, Simon Sheikh, Gayatri Spivak, Hito Steyerl, Lawrence Venuti"--

TRACK is an international art exhibition taking place in the public and semi-public space of Ghent from 12 May till 16 September 2012. It offers unexpected encounters with the city, its history and its inhabitants, stimulating reflection on urban realities and, in a wider sense, the contemporary human condition. Curators Philippe Van Cauteren and Mirjam Varadinis invited forty-one artists to conceive artworks strongly rooted in the urban fabric of Ghent, but linking the local context with issues of global significance. Participating artists: Lara Almarcegui, Pawel Althamer, Sven Augustijnen, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Massimo Bartolini, John Bock, Michaël Borremans, Mike Bouchet, Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan, Christoph Büchel, Peter Buggenhout, Mircea Cantor, Leo Copers, Simona Denicolai, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Cyprien Gaillard, Mekhitar Garabedian, Christina Hemauer Roman Keller, Adelita Husni-Bey, Tadashi Kawamata, Susanne Kriemann, Alon Levin, Erik van Lieshout, Bart Lodewijks, Emilio López-Menchero.
