Abstract

This book focuses on the exciting possibilities for representing the built environment with techniques ranging from pencil sketching to computers. It teaches students the following skills: how to draw using a range of media, the basic rules of making effective spatial images, and how to express ideas through appropriate media and forms of communication. Following a revised and expanded introduction, the book is divided into three sections: Media, Types, and Places. Each section is illustrated with exemplary drawings and accompanying commentaries. Step-by-step sequences and practical tips will

Abstract

Textile tectonics" reveals how natural, ornamental and folkloristic patterns - from the veins of leaves to Gothic rose windows, from foam formations to traditional styles of hair braiding and from Celtic knotwork to knitting patterns - can be digitally elaborated into breathtaking, programmable and architecturally viable structures. Internationally renowned architect and researcher Lars Spuybroek has been investigating the relationships between art, architecture and information technology. His students in the Georgia Institute of Technolgy, School of Architecture have contributed their projects in this second book in research and design.

Abstract

The script of life is for a large part written by architects and designers. This title discusses such issues as the contemporary interrelationship of industrial design and architecture and a confrontation of contemporary design practice in both domains with academic theory and education.

Abstract

"In 1987, Peter G. Rowe published his pioneering book Design Thinking. In it, he interrogated conceptual approaches to design in terms of both process and form. Thirty years later, in a lecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Rowe offered a reappraisal of his earlier work, describing ways in which the capacities of the digital age have changed the way we perceive and understand creative problem-solving in architectural design. In this new account of 'design thinking' based on that memorable talk, Rowe charges that ideas about the 'precision' and 'incompleteness' of information have become exaggerated and made more manifest. He dives into the crucial role of schema theory and the heuristics that flow from it, but concedes that the 'ineffable characteristics of design problems and of design thinking also appear to have remained'."--Cover.
