There are three observations that I would make about my work. First of all, and above all, I'm a sculptor, my most important concern is to get all the forms to look right. I try to eliminate faulty distortions and areas that look too flat, and those that do not register properly to my eye. Then, there is the matter of impact. I use models, oftentimes to get a maximum impact with the work, who are physically large and (to me) very sculptural, the third is one of communicating, this often takes care of itself. I express my feelings of empathy and sympathy for the subjects I portray through their weariness and despair. Duane Hanson

De vraag welk recht van toepassing is bij grensoverschrijdende tewerkstelling van werknemers is brandend actueel. Diverse stakeholders (zowel inspectiediensten, werkgevers, werknemers, vakbonden als beleidsmakers) worstelen hiermee en bijten er soms hun tanden op stuk. Dit boek heeft de ambitie een compleet naslagwerk te zijn voor iedereen die geconfronteerd wordt met deze complexe, maar uitermate boeiende problematiek. Voor wat het toepasselijk arbeidsrecht betreft, vertrekt het boek van het Verdrag van Rome van 19 juni 1980 (EVO) en de Verordening Rome I, om dan over te gaan tot een analyse van de Detacheringsrichtlijn die daar een verbijzondering van uitmaakt. Ook de zgn. Handhavingsrichtlijn wordt in detail besproken, alsook de recente omzetting ervan in Belgisch recht. Dit telkens aan de hand van de rechtspraak van zowel het Hof van Justitie, als van de Belgische hoven en rechtbanken. Ook de laatste ontwikkelingen inzake de verplichte LIMOSA-melding en de recente voorstellen van de Europese Commissie tot herziening van de Detacheringsrichtlijn komen aan bod. Voor wat de aanwijzing van het toepasselijk recht betreft op het gebied van de sociale zekerheid, vertrekt het boek vanuit het eigen Belgisch kader, om vervolgens de Europese coördinatieverordening 883/2004 en haar uitvoeringsverordening 987/2009 te bespreken. On July 9, 1975, Dutch-born artist Bas Jan Ader set sail from Chatham, Massachusetts, on a thirteen-foot sailboat. He was bound for Falmouth, England, on the second leg of a three-part piece titled In Search of the Miraculous. The damaged boat was found south of the western tip of Ireland nearly a year later. Ader was never seen again. Since his untimely death, Ader has achieved mythic status in the art world as a figure literally willing to die for his art. Considering the artist's legacy and concise oeuvre beyond the romantic and tragic associations that accompany his peculiar end, Alexander Dumbadze resituates Ader's art and life within the conceptual art world of Los Angeles in the early 1970s and offers a nuanced argument about artistic subjectivity that explains Ader's tremendous relevance to contemporary art. Bas Jan Ader blends biography, theoretical reflection, and archival research to draw a detailed picture of the world in which Ader's work was rooted: a vibrant international art scene populated with peers such as Ger van Elk, William Leavitt, and Allen Ruppersberg. Dumbadze looks closely at Ader's engagement with questions of free will and his ultimate success in creating art untainted by mediation. The first in-depth study of this enigmatic conceptual artist, Bas Jan Ader is a thoughtful reflection on the necessity of the creative act and its inescapable relation to death.
