In this companion volume to Professor Waterhouse's Painting in Britain: 1530-1790 and Dr Whinney's Sculpture in Britain: 1530-1830 Sir John Summerson describes the architecture of the period that stretches from the Early Renaissance to the post- Waterloo Greek and Gothic Revivals. Among the great names of those centuries were Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, Vanbrugh, Robert Adam, and John Nash. During the same period were built Hampton Court, Hatfield, the new St Paul's, the City churches, the graceful London squares, and the crescents and terraces of Bath. In addition to the main text two long appendices deal with Scottish architecture and the buildings in the Thirteen Colonies of America. With the numerous plans specially drawn for it, this study, as The Times Literary Supplement forecast, 'will certainly remain the standard textbook for many years to come'. 'It gathers up for the edification of professionals and amateurs alike'-to quote the Guardian-'all that is essential in these three great centuries of our architectural history with a mastery and a precision that it is a pleasure to salute.'
