Traditionally, texts and images have been discussed together on the assumption that they are 'sister arts', but in Reading Iconotexts Peter Wagner pushes beyond the word-image opposition in a radical attempt to break down the barriers between literature and art. He sets out here the new approach he has identified for dealing with the 'iconotext' - a genre in which neither image nor text is free from the other. Examples include Swift's Gulliver's Travels, a number of William Hogarth's best-known engravings, and a sample of the so-called 'obscene' propaganda prints that were published during the French Revolution. Throughout, the author argues for the importance of seeing text and image as mutually interdependent in the ways they establish meaning. It becomes clear in the course of Wagner's exposition that one cannot study prints without taking into account their accompanying inscriptions; whilst illustrated books contain two kinds of 'text' - one verbal, one visual - that are invariably at odds with one another. Drawing on theories of intertextuality and semiotics as developed by Barthes and Kristeva, as well as post-structuralist studies by Derrida, Foucault and others, Reading Iconotexts treats pictures as encoded visual discourse and illustrations in books as counter-discourse. The author's persuasively argued polemic in favour of recognising the 'iconotext' as a viable advance in methodology is an important contribution to current debates on word and image.

"L'homme et l'oeuvre... Il fut un temps où la critique éclairait et expliquait l'un par l'autre. Temps révolu, certes, pour les études littéraires, et que les modes de la création médiévale auraient de toute façon voué à l'échec. Car au Moyen Âge, l'anonymat de l'auteur et de l'oeuvre est un fait massif des arts et de la littérature. De fait, le nom de l'auteur est bien souvent absent des oeuvres médiévales: point de signature, encore moins de figure pour incarner l'auctorialité des textes, des tableaux, des compositions musicales ou des édifices... Pour autant, l'anonymat n'est pas un vide, mais plutôt un creux où vient se lover une intention particulière. Il n'est pas une forme absente, mais un effet qui contribue à construire l'identité et la signification des oeuvres. On pourrait même dire qu'il n'y a pas un, mais des anonymats, qui dessinent, dans la lecture que l'on peut faire de la création médiévale, autant de lignes de force différentes, et qui remplissent des fonctions variées. aren Simaeys, 09 juni 2020De jongen en de mol gaan op stap. Al snel sluit de vos aan en wat later komt het paard erbij. Ze zijn allemaal anders, maar misschien herken je jezelf wel in alle vier.In deze beeldroman heb je het nieuwsgierige jongetje. Zijn vragen worden beantwoord door de mol en het paard. De vos heeft duidelijk het meest meegemaakt, hij is eerder zwijgzaam. En ja, ? de mol heeft altijd zin in taart.Het boek is een verzameling van levenswijsheden en van ups en downs. Iedereen komt ze vroeg of laat tegen, de ene rugzak weegt al wat zwaarder dan de andere en iedereen gaat er op zijn eigen manier mee om. Zo ook bij de jongen, de mol, de vos en het paard. Vriendschap staat centraal.Het is een boek om ontdekt te worden. Alles kan: zwijgen, kijken, kwetsbaarheid en angst tonen, vragen stellen, filosoferen, vertellen wat je van het leven vindt, ? Je mag zelfs beginnen en stoppen met lezen waar je wilt en er is ook plaats gelaten voor je eigen aantekeningen. De levenswijsheden kunnen ook gewoon als spreuk dienen. Knap hoe ze achter elkaar geplaatst werden en zo ook een rode draad en een verhaal kunnen vormen.Charlie Mackesy zorgde voor knappe pentekeningen, zonder veel details. Af en toe zijn ze ingekleurd, maar meestal zijn ze gewoon zwart wit. De tekst lijkt ook handgeschreven te zijn. Ze vullen elkaar mooi aan. Het verhaal gaat soms verder in de illustraties.Het boek start met wat uitleg van de auteur. Hij vertelt hoe hij te werk ging. Voor sommige lezers zeker handig om de bedoeling te begrijpen en wat meer achtergrond te hebben.De linnen rug zorgt voor dat extraatje in de vormgeving. Het geheel krijgt nog wat meer cachet.Ik heb genoten van dit concept, maar een echt kinderboek is dit niet. Eerder eentje om cadeau te doen aan iemand die je een warm hart toedraagt.
